Vulcans claim upset over No. 20 IUP, 67-63

CALIFORNIA (Feb. 8) – For the second time this season, the California University of Pennsylvania women's basketball team upset a nationally-ranked team at the Convocation Center, posting a 67-63 upset over No. 20 IUP on Wednesday night in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) West play.

With the victory, the Vulcans improve to 13-8 this season behind a 10-7 mark in league action. Meanwhile, the Crimson Hawks fall to 17-4 overall and remain in third place in the league standings with a 13-4 record in conference play.

Senior guard Danielle Luckett (Chicago, Ill./James Hubert Blake (Md.)) posted her fourth 20-point game of the season, scoring a game-high 20 points on 6-of-13 from the floor and eight-of-eight from the free-throw line. She also tallied four rebounds, five assists and five steals in the win over IUP. Luckett is averaging 19.3 points over the last six games behind three 20-point games.

Classmate Amy Johns (McKeesport, Pa./McKeesport) added 19 points and led all players with eight rebounds (four offensive) while playing 38 minutes. Freshman Emma Mahady (Albury, Australia/Xavier) added eight points while sophomore Ryah Gadson (McKeesport, Pa./McKeesport) posted five points and four rebounds. Sophomore forward Elena Antonenko (Moscow, Russia/State University of Physical Education) finished with six points, four rebounds and three blocks off the bench.

A jumper by Johns put the Vulcans on the scoreboard first at 2-0 and Cal U answered a 6-0 IUP run by scoring four-unanswered points to tie the game at 10-10 with 16 minutes remaining. A three-pointer by freshman Chelsea McKnight (Grove City, Ohio/Harvest Prep) tied the game at 17-17 with just over eight minutes remaining in the half. Johns put in a lay-up off of an entry pass by Antonenko to give the Vulcans a 23-22 lead at the 2:56-mark. Gadson closed out the first half by sinking two free-throws to give Cal U its biggest lead of the half at 29-23.

Luckett started the second half by scoring six-straight points to extend the Vulcans' lead to 35-25 with 17:19 to go. Three free-throws brought IUP within six points at 42-36 with just over 12 minutes remaining. Consecutive baskets gave the Crimson Hawks the lead back at 49-48 at the 7:06-mark. Cal U countered with back-to-back three-pointers to take a 59-53 lead with just under four minutes remaining. Two free-throws brought the Crimson Hawks within three points at 63-60 with a minute to go before Luckett closed out the game by hitting two free-throws.

Cal U finished the game shooting 38.6 percent (22-of-57) from the field while making a season-high 90.5 percent (19-of-21) from the free-throw line. In comparison, IUP shot 37.7 percent (20-of-53) from the field and 72.0 percent (18-of-25) from the charity stripe. The Vulcans held a slim 38-35 rebounding advantage and forced the Crimson Hawks into 22 turnovers. Cal U recorded seven blocks and collected 17 assists against IUP.

Three Crimson Hawks scored in double figures with a team-high 16 points by freshman guard Amy Fairman. Junior forward Sarah Pastorek added 12 points and a team-high six rebounds.
