Cal U falls at No. 20 Gannon, 92-76

ERIE, Pa. (Feb. 4) – Seniors Amy Johns (McKeesport, Pa./McKeesport) and Danielle Luckett (Chicago, Ill./James Hubert Blake (Md.)) each posted 20-point games on Saturday evening, as the Vulcans suffered a 92-76 loss to No. 20 Gannon at the Hammermill Center in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) West action.

With the loss, the California University of Pennsylvania women's basketball team fall to 12-8 overall and 9-7 in league play. Meanwhile, Gannon improves to 17-3 this season behind a 14-2 conference record. The Golden Knights have won four of the five meetings against the Vulcans at the Hammermill Center since Gannon joined the PSAC in 2008-09.

Luckett scored a season-high 26 points (13 in both halves) after shooting 9-of-14 from the field and six-of-seven from the free-throw line. She also collected six rebounds, three assists and three steals in the loss. The reigning PSAC West Athlete of the Week, Luckett is averaging 17.8 points over the last six games with a pair of 20-point games.

Johns posted 21 points (14 second half) after making 8-of-17 from the floor and five-of-six from the charity stripe on Saturday. She collected seven rebounds (four offensive) while playing all 40 minutes. Johns now ranks No. 14 in school history with 1,136 points, moving past Tammy McIntire-Mandich on the all-time scoring list.

Junior guard Ryah Gadson (McKeesport, Pa./McKeesport) added nine points off the bench, while sophomore forward Elena Antonenko (Moscow, Russia/State University of Physical Education) registered a team-high eight rebounds (four offensive) after missing the last three games.

Cal U scored the game's first basket on a lay-up by Johns before Gannon mounted a run to take an 18-4 lead with just under 13 minutes left in the first half. The Vulcans trimmed the deficit to 20-10 on a jumper by Luckett with 11 minutes left before the Golden Knights scored six-straight points to take a 26-11 lead at the 9:53-mark. Gannon stretched its first-half lead to as many as 18 points, 42-24, before taking a 44-29 lead into the break.

The Vulcans scored the first two baskets in the second half and cut the deficit to single digits, 51-42, after Antonenko converted a traditional three-point play with 15:46 remaining. After Gannon reclaimed a double-digit lead, Cal U worked the deficit down to eight points, 57-49, after a lay-up from Johns at the 12:15-mark. The Golden Knights responded with a 7-2 run to take a 64-53 lead with 9:19 left and led by as many as 17 points, 73-56, with 4:07 to play. Behind a pair of three-pointers, Cal U trimmed the deficit to 75-64 at the 2:20-mark before Gannon made its last four shots from the field and converted eight free-throws to close the game.

Cal U finished the game shooting 41.3 percent (26-of-63) from the field and 28.6 percent (6-of-21) from beyond the arc after making just one-of-seven from long range in the first half. In comparison, Gannon made 54.7 percent (29-of-53) from the floor, 50.0 percent (7-of-14) from three-point territory and 87.1 percent (27-of-31) from the free-throw line.

The Vulcans held a 35-30 advantage on the glass and scored 13 second-chance points. However, the Golden Knights scored 29 points off turnovers and 36 points from inside the paint.

Gannon sophomore Jennifer Papich scored a career-high 31 points after shooting 11-of-15 from the field and eight-of-eight from the charity stripe. Guards Doriyon Glass and Kelley Sundberg each added 10 points in the win.
