Women's Basketball falls in quarterfinals, 77-58

EDINBORO, Pa. (Feb. 28) – Senior Amy Johns (McKeesport, Pa./McKeesport) scored 15 points in the second half, but the California University of Pennsylvania women's basketball team fell at top-seeded Edinboro, 77-58, on Tuesday night in the quarterfinals of the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Tournament.

With the loss, the Vulcans finish the season 17-11 overall and snap their streak of championship-game appearances at 11 seasons. With the win, the Fighting Scots advance to take on West Chester on Friday, March 2, in the semifinals of the PSAC Tournament.

In her final game as a Vulcan, Johns led the way with 19 points on 6-of-17 shooting. The McKeesport native also posted a team-high seven rebounds (five offensive) in 29 minutes on Tuesday.

Making her seventh-straight start, freshman Irina Kukolj  (Harrisonburg, Va./Harrisonburg) had four points and established career highs with eight rebounds and 22 minutes in the loss.

Classmates Chelsea McKnight (Grove City, Ohio/Harvest Prep) and Selena Adamshick (Harveys Lake, Pa./Lake Lehman) each had nine points with Adamshick adding six rebounds.

Edinboro raced out to a 13-0 lead before a lay-up by Adamshick at the 14:19-mark put the Vulcans on the board and brought the score to 13-2. A  Danielle Luckett (Chicago, Ill./James Hubert Blake (Md.)) jumper kept Cal U within 13 at 17-4 with just over 13 minutes remaining. The Fighting Scots put a 12-4 run together to extend the lead to 29-8 at the 8:01-mark. Another Edinboro run put the Fighting Scots up 39-14 with just over three minutes left in the first half. Luckett closed out the first half by sinking two free-throws to cut the deficit to 21 at 44-23.

The Vulcans started the second half by scoring five-unanswered points at the 14:11-mark to stay within 20 at 49-29. Eight-straight points by Johns made it 73-56 with just over one minute remaining in the game.

Cal U struggled shooting the ball, converting on just 22-of-77 shots from the field, while top-seeded Edinboro shot 40.9 percent (27-of-66) from the floor. Cal U out-scored Edinboro both in the paint (36-34) and off the bench (24-8). The Fighting Scots scored 34 points off 25 turnovers by the Vulcans.

Senior Renee' Brown led three Fighting Scots in double figures, posting a game-high 24 points to go along with 12 rebounds (six offensive). Junior Samantha Blazetic added 21 points, seven rebounds and five blocks on Tuesday, while classmate Kiara Brown had 11 points on 5-of-14 shooting in the win.
