EDINBORO, Pa. (Feb. 25) – The Vulcans had their five-game winning streak snapped on Saturday afternoon when they suffered an 85-67 loss to No. 2 Edinboro at McComb Fieldhouse in Pennsylania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) West play.
With the loss, the California University of Pennsylvania women's basketball team finishes the regular season to 17-9 overall and 14-8 in league action. Meanwhile, Edinboro improves to 25-1 this season behind a 21-1 mark in conference play. The Vulcans and Fighting Scots will meet again in the quarterfinals of the PSAC Tournament on Tuesday, Feb. 28, at 7 p.m.
Senior
Nakia DeBlanc (Pittsburgh, Pa./Woodland Hills) and
Danielle Luckett (Chicago, Ill./James Hubert Blake (Md.)) both finished with 14 points in the loss. In her first start of the season, DeBlanc shot 6-of-12 from the floor while adding three assists and two steals. Luckett collected six assists on Saturday.
Senior forward
Amy Johns (McKeesport, Pa./McKeesport) posted 11 and four rebounds, while freshman guard
Chelsea McKnight (Grove City, Ohio/Harvest Prep) added eight points behind a pair of three-pointers on Saturday. Freshman
Irina Kukolj (Harrisonburg, Va./Harrisonburg) led the team with a career-high seven rebounds (four offensive).
Six-early points by DeBlanc put Cal U up 8-2 to start the game before Edinboro took an 18-17 lead after a three-pointer at the 13:10-mark. A lay-up by DeBlanc gave the Vulcans the lead back at 23-22 with just under 11 minutes remaining. Edinboro quickly reclaimed the lead and Cal U cut the deficit to five points, 37-32, with 4:14 left in the half. Edinboro ended the first half on a 4-0 run to take the 45-34 lead at the break.
Johns started the second half by making a pair of two free-throws to bring Cal U within nine points, 45-36. The Fighting Scots later scored five-straight points to take a 5-40 lead at the 16:45-mark. Luckett eventually trimmed the deficit to 12 points, 64-52, with 12:50 remaining.
In the loss, Cal U shot 44.6 percent (25-of-56) from the floor and 75.0 percent (15-of-20) from the free-throw line. Comparatively, Edinboro shot 46.5 percent from the field (33-of-71) and 60.0 percent (12-of-20) from the charity stripe. The Fighting Scots out-rebounded the Vulcans by a 45-29 margin and scored 27 second-chance points.
Junior Kiara Brown led four Edinboro players in double-digits with 21 points, while classmate Samantha Blazetic finished with 20 points (12 first half) on 8-of-16 shooting while posting a game-high nine rebounds. Freshman Raven Metz added seven points, eight rebounds, eight assists and four steals in the win.
Cal U begins play in the PSAC Tournament on Tuesday, Feb. 28, when it travels to face Edinboro for the second time in four days. The Fighting Scots swept the season series against the Vulcans this year after posting a 75-58 win over Cal U in the PSAC Championship last season.
