CALIFORNIA (Feb. 1) - Despite being down just two points at halftime, the California University of Pennsylvania women's basketball team fell 77-55 to No.2 Edinboro on Wednesday evening at the Convocation Center in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) West play.
With the loss, the Vulcans fall to 12-7 overall with a 9-6 mark in league play. Meanwhile, Edinboro remains one of only two undefeated teams in the country by improving to 19-0 on the year behind a 14-0 conference mark.
Senior forward
Amy Johns (McKeesport, Pa./McKeesport) scored a season-high 25 points (17 first half) on 11-of-25 attempts. She also tied for the team lead with six rebounds (four offensive) and collected two steals in the loss. Johns, who posted her seventh 20-point game of the year on Wednesday, now ranks No. 15 in school history with 1,115 career points.
Guard
Danielle Luckett (Chicago, Ill./James Hubert Blake (Md.)) finished with 17 points, five rebounds, three assists and two steals, while freshman forward
Selena Adamshick (Harveys Lake, Pa./Lake Lehman) added six points and six rebounds.
Seven early points by forward Samantha Blazetic gave Edinboro a 7-3 lead to start the first half. A lay-up by Johns at the 14:43-mark tied the game at 7-7. Cal U took a slim 19-17 lead with 9:28 remaining after a lay-up by junior
Nakia DeBlanc (Pittsburgh, Pa./Woodland Hills). A Johns jumper tied the game at 22-22 with 6:42 left in the half before the Vulcans took a three-point lead, 27-24, with just under three minutes remaining. Edinboro closed the first half on an 8-3 run to take a 32-30 lead at the break.
The second half started with back-to-back Edinboro three-pointers to give the Fighting Scots a 40-32 lead with 16:18 remaining. A 7-2 Cal U run at the 13:30-mark brought the Vulcans within three points, 42-39. A jumper by Luckett followed by a Johns lay-up shrunk the Edinboro lead to five points, 54-49, with just under eight minutes remaining in the half. The Fighting Scots closed out the game on a 16-4 run.
Cal U shot 32.8 percent (21-of-64) from the field and 25.0 percent (two-of-eight) from beyond the arc. Comparatively, Edinboro shot 55.0 percent (33-of-60) from the field and 36.4 percent (7-of-13) from long range. The Fighting Scots, who committed 31 turnovers, held a sizeable 44-31 advantage on the glass and scored 42 points from inside the paint.
Three Fighting Scots finished in double figures led by Blazetic with 23 points. Senior Raven Metz had 16 points and nine rebounds (five offensive), while junior Kiara Brown scored 18 points and collected a game-high six steals.
