CALIFORNIA (Jan. 7) – Despite the third-straight double-double by senior forward
Amy Johns (McKeesport, Pa./McKeesport), the Vulcans suffered an 89-66 loss against West Chester on Saturday evening in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Crossover action at the Convocation Center.
With the loss, the California University of Pennsylvania women's basketball team falls to 8-4 this year with a 5-3 mark in league play. The loss also snapped the Vulcans' five-game losing streak. Meanwhile, West Chester improves to 9-3 overall behind a 5-3 record in conference action.
Johns finished with 13 points while shooting just 3-of-13 from the field and seven-of-nine from the free-throw line. She also registered a game-high 10 rebounds (six offensive) for her fourth double-double this year and added a team-best six assists. Through 12 games this year, Johns leads the team in scoring, rebounding, field-goal percentage and minutes.
Junior guard
Stephanie Michael (Morgantown, W.Va./Morgantown) led three players in double-digits with 14 points behind four-of-eight attempts from beyond the arc. Senior
Danielle Luckett (Chicago, Ill./James Hubert Blake (Md.)) finished with 10 points, three rebounds, three assists and three steals, while freshman
Chelsea McKnight (Grove City, Ohio/Harvest Prep) added eight points and five steals off the bench.
After leading by 21 points at halftime, the Golden Rams expanded their lead to 70-43 with 10:02 left in the game. Cal U then mounted a 17-5 rally over nearly four minutes to cut the deficit to 15 points, 75-60, with 6:07 remaining. The Vulcans shot five-of-eight from the floor and made three treys during the run. However, West Chester mounted a 12-2 run to expand its lead to 87-62 with 1:39 to play.
Cal U finished the game shooting just 32.4 percent (24-of-74) from the field and made only 55.0 percent (11-of-20) from the free-throw line. Despite posting 19 offensive rebounds, the Vulcans were out-rebounded by a 56-45 margin and committed a season-high 23 turnovers.
West Chester senior Allison Hostetter, who scored her 1,000-career point in the win, finished with 22 points, nine rebounds, three assists and two steals. Junior forward Alexandra Lennon added 22 points, eight rebounds and three blocks in the win.
The Vulcans return to the court on Wednesday, Jan. 11, when they open divisional play at rival IUP, who has a two-game lead over Cal U in the league standings.
