Vulcans down Lock Haven, 68-51

LOCK HAVEN, Pa. (Jan. 21) – Behind 19 points from senior Chad Tipton (Hanover, Pa./South Western), the California University of Pennsylvania men's basketball team posted a 68-51 victory over Lock Haven on Saturday afternoon in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) West play. 

With the win, the Vulcans moves to 10-8 overall and 7-5 in league play. The loss brings Lock Haven to 0-15 on the season and 0-12 in the PSAC.

Tipton led the way for Cal U with 19 points on five-of-eight shooting from the field, including three-of-five from beyond the arc, and six-of-six from the free-throw line. Senior forward Steve Swiech (Greenock, Pa./Elizabeth-Forward) tallied 11 points and grabbed a team-best eight rebounds with two blocks. Guards Keith Lowe (Columbus, Ohio/Centennial) and Tynell Fortune (Harlem, N.Y./Pocono Mountain West (Pa.)) each collected three assists.

Senior CJ Townes (Joppatowne, Md./Joppatowne) put the Vulcans on the board first with a lay-up at the 19:44-mark. With the game tied at 13-13, both teams traded baskets until Lock Haven eventually took a six-point lead, 27-21, with 3:15 remaining. The Vulcans cut the Bald Eagles advantage to just three points, 29-26, as the half ended.

The second half started with Lock Haven jumping out to an eight-point lead, 38-30, at the 16:43-mark. Junior Mitchell Weedon (Frederick, Md./Tuscarora) scored four points in a row to give Cal U a 37-36 lead with 13:43 remaining. With the game tied at 41-41 at the 10:34-mark, the Vulcans mounted a 10-1 run to take a 51-42 lead with just under eight minutes to go. Lock Haven would get no closer than five points for the remainder of the game.

Freshman Terrell Johnson was the only Lock Haven player to record double-digit points, scoring a career-high 24 points while playing all 40 minutes.

As a team, the Vulcans shot 44.7 percent (11-of-24) from the field and 37.5 percent (three-of-eight) from beyond the arc. Cal U out-rebounded Lock Haven 41-25 and totaled 16 assists compared to six by the Bald Eagles. Cal U held Lock Haven to just one-of-seven from the three-point line in the second half after the Bald Eagles shot four-of-eight in the first half.
