CALIFORNIA (Jan. 14) – Senior forward
Amy Johns (McKeesport, Pa./McKeesport) reached the 1,000-point milestone on Saturday afternoon, as the Vulcans posted a 72-63 upset victory over No. 21 Gannon in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) West action at the Convocation Center.
With the win, the California University of Pennsylvania women's basketball team improves to 9-5 overall with a 6-4 mark in league play. Meanwhile, the Golden Knights fall to 11-3 this year behind an 8-2 record in conference action.
Johns finished with 18 points (12 second half) after shooting 8-of-18 from the field. She became the 24th player in school history to surpass the 1,000-point mark, ranking No. 22 all-time with 1,014 career points. Johns also collected a team-high seven rebounds and added two assists and two steals against the Golden Knights.
Freshman guard
Chelsea McKnight (Grove City, Ohio/Harvest Prep) tied her season high with 13 points after making three-of-seven from the floor and six-of-six from the free-throw line. She also tied her season high with seven rebounds while making her first start since Dec. 4.
Sophomore
Elena Antonenko (Moscow, Russia/State University of Physical Education) added nine points and six rebounds (four offensive) off the bench, while senior
Danielle Luckett (Chicago, Ill./James Hubert Blake (Md.)) and junior
Nakia DeBlanc (Pittsburgh, Pa./Woodland Hills) both finished with eight points.
Leading 33-31 at halftime, the Golden Knights stretched their lead to 46-40 early in the second half. The Vulcans countered by scoring seven-unanswered points to take a 47-46 lead after a three-pointer by Johns with 10:58 remaining. Gannon responded to take the lead before back-to-back baskets by Luckett gave Cal U a 57-55 lead at the 5:15-mark.
After a pair of Golden Knight free-throws, the Vulcans seized control of the game with an 11-1 run over four-plus minutes to take a 68-58 lead with 45 seconds left. During the run, Gannon missed all six of its field-goal attempts and committed four turnovers. Cal U maintained its lead after making 8-of-10 free-throws down the stretch.
After shooting 50 percent in the first half, Cal U finished the game making 45.8 percent (27-of-59) from the field. The Vulcans also shot 65.2 percent (15-of-23) from the free-throw line on Saturday. In comparison, Gannon made 42.6 percent (23-of-54) from the floor and 70.0 percent (14-of-20) from the charity stripe.
The Vulcans out-rebounded the Golden Knights by a sizeable 44-28 margin and scored 32 points from inside the paint. Cal U also totaled 20 points off turnovers and finished with 14 second-chance points against Gannon.
Redshirt freshman guard Doriyon Glass led the Golden Knights with 11 points in the loss, while forwards Jennifer Papich and Nettie Blake each added 10 points.
