CALIFORNIA (Sept. 11) – Senior forward
Breeanna Robinson (East Hampstead, N.H./Pinkerton Academy) registered the first hat trick at the new Soccer Facility on Sunday afternoon, as the No. 10 Vulcans cruised to a 7-0 victory over West Virginia Wesleyan.
With the victory, the California University of Pennsylvania women's soccer team improves to 2-0-0 this season and has now out-scored its opponents by an 11-0 margin this season. Meanwhile, the Bobcats suffer their first loss of the year and fall to 3-1-0 overall after being chosen as the preseason favorite in the West Virginia Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WVIAC) poll.
In the 28th minute, the Bobcats nearly took the lead when Tori Wilson attempted a shot on an open net before senior
Kristen Orrett (Pickering, Ontario/Pickering) made a 'team save' while goalkeeper
Paula Jackson (Kingston, Jamaica/Wolmer's Trust) was recovering from challenging an initial shot attempt. Cal U then took a 1-0 lead less than a minute later when Robinson tallied her first goal of the season (unassisted) at the 29:18-mark.
The Vulcans added to the lead in the 33rd minute when junior
Carley Work (Hopewell, Pa./Hopewell) registered her fourth goal of the year following a corner kick from classmate
Kayla Fransko (Monongahela, Pa./Ringgold). Cal U extended its lead to 3-0 before halftime when Robinson scored off a feed from freshman
Megan Politowski (Pittsburgh, Pa./Baldwin).
Robinson, who was an all-conference player at Hartford (Conn.), completed the hat trick at the 53:51-mark off a pass from freshman
Erin Hogan (Beaver, Pa./Beaver). Cal U took a 5-0 lead in the 63rd minute when Orrett scored on a rebound (unassisted) before freshman
Jordan Gray (Whitby, Ontario/Sinclair Secondary) scored the first goal of her career off a feed from classmate
Chelsea Crockett (Gilmanton, N.H./Gilford) at the 74:13-mark. The Vulcans scored their last goal of the game in the 80th minute when Crockett tallied her first career goal with an assist from fellow freshman
Taylor Scurci (Aliquippa, Pa./Hopewell).
Jackson registered her 26th career shutout on Sunday, making two saves in 90 minutes of action. Bobcats' starter Caroline Lalley collected eight saves and allowed three goals on 15 shot attempts in the first period before Emma McCoy posted four saves in the second period.
Cal U controlled the pace of the game, out-shooting West Virginia Wesleyan by an impressive 27-4 margin and posting a 5-4 advantage in corner kicks.
The Vulcans are scheduled to open Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) play on Friday, Sept. 16, when they host Slippery Rock at 2 p.m. Last year, Cal U posted a 3-0 victory over Slippery Rock in the regular season before posting a 1-1 double-overtime tie in the second round of the NCAA Tournament.
