Vulcans split on second day at UMD

DULUTH, Minn. (Sept. 10) – The Vulcans took a split on Saturday while competing at the Minnesota Duluth Tournament, earning a 3-0 victory against Bemidji State (Minn.) in the morning before dropping a 3-1 match to the host and No. 7 Bulldogs at night.

With the split, the California University of Pennsylvania volleyball team moves to 6-2 overall under first-year head coach Peter Letourneau.

The Vulcans opened the day with a 3-0 victory (25-12, 25-16, 25-23) against Bemidji State. Junior Brandy Harris (Bedford, Pa./Bedford) led the team with 14 kills, while sophomore Molly Delaney (Carmel, Ind./Westfield) and junior Chelsea Wilson (Bellwood, Pa./Bellwood Antis) each finished with eight kills with Wilson registering a team-high .615 hitting percentage. Junior Kelly Fromknecht (Erie, Pa./McDowell) and sophomore Abbey Freund (Cottage Grove, Wis./Monona Grove) directed the offense with 17 assists each.

Delaney and senior Sara McMullen (State College, Pa./State College) both posted a team-high nine digs with Freund and Harris adding eight and seven digs, respectively. McMullen also recorded four service aces and four players collected three blocks in the victory.

Against host UMD, Cal U suffered a 3-1 loss (23-25, 22-25, 25-23, 19-25) on Saturday night. Junior Meghan Franz (Cranberry Twp., Pa./Seneca Valley) led the team with 14 kills on 24 attempts for a .583 hitting percentage and Harris added a double-double with 10 kills and 10 digs. Fromknecht and Freund combined for 44 assists, while McMullen led the team with 15 digs. Franz and Wilson added five and four blocks, respectively, in the loss.

The Vulcans return to action with their first home match of the season on Wednesday, Sept. 14, as they host Point Park at Hamer Hall, starting at 7 p.m.
