Vulcans finish 10th at NCAA Regionals

HUMMELSTOWN, Pa. (May 4) – For the second-straight year, the California University of Pennsylvania men's golf team finished in 10th place at the NCAA Atlantic/East Region Championships, as it shot a 31-over 319 in the final round on Wednesday at the event hosted by the Hershey Links.

The Vulcans finished the 20-team tournament with a 57-over 921 (303-299-319). St. Thomas Aquinas (N.Y.) won the tournament after leading wire-to-wire and carding a seven-over 871 (280-293-298), while IUP finished second at 17-over 881 (288-295-298). Clarion senior Jared Schmader claimed medalist honors by two strokes after posting a four-under 212 (67-74-71) for the three-round event.

Junior Paul Babashanian (Chesapeake, Va./Great Bridge) was the top finisher for Cal U, finishing the tournament tied for 28th overall with a 10-over 226 (69-76-81). He posted a nine-over 81 (41-40) in the final round, highlighted by his seventh birdie at the event.

Sophomore Justin Newbauer (Georgetown, Pa./South Side) carded a team-best five-over 77 (39-38) in the third round to finish the tournament at 14-over 230 (78-75-77) and tied for 43rd overall in a field of 108 golfers. Junior Austin Stoddard (Pittsfield, Pa./Youngsville) also posted a 14-over 230 (76-75-79) at the Hershey Links, including a five-over 79 (41-38) on Wednesday.

Redshirt freshman Chris Tull (Bluffton, S.C./Heritage Academy) finished the third round with a 10-over 82 (37-45) to tie for 73rd overall with a 21-over 237 (80-75-82). Freshman Nick Erlichman (Shrewsbury, Mass./Shrewsbury) was one stroke back of Tull for the tournament, shooting a 22-over 238 (81-74-73) after finishing with an 11-over 83 (39-44) on Wednesday at the Hershey Links.

The top five teams and the top two student-athletes not with a team from the regional championships will now advance to the 2011 NCAA National Championships from May 16-20 at the Robert Trent Jones Golf Trail in Florence, Ala.
