HUMMELSTOWN, Pa. (May 3) – The Vulcans carded an 11-over 299 on Tuesday in the second round to move into ninth place in the team standings of the NCAA Atlantic/East Region Championships at the Hershey Links.
The California University of Pennsylvania men's golf team now ranks ninth in the 20-team field with a 26-over 602 (303-299) with one round left to play. St Thomas Aquinas (N.Y.) maintained its lead by shooting a five-over 293 on Tuesday and now holds a 10-stroke lead at three-under 573 (280-293). Concord carded the best team score in the second round at one-under 287 and moved up six spots in the team standings to third place. After two rounds at Hershey Links, three golfers are tied for the tournament lead at four-under 140.
Junior
Paul Babashanian (Chesapeake, Va./Great Bridge) started the day in fourth place before posting a four-over 76 (39-37) on Tuesday. He now is tied for 12th overall in a field of 108 golfers with a two-round score of one-over 145 (69-76).
Fellow junior
Austin Stoddard (Pittsfield, Pa./Youngsville) carded a three-over 75 (38-37) with two birdies in the second round to move into a tie for 41st overall at seven-over 151 (76-75). Sophomore
Justin Newbauer (Georgetown, Pa./South Side) moved up 11 places on the leaderboard after also shooting a three-over 75 (38-37) on Tuesday. He is now tied for 53rd overall at the three-round tournament with a nine-over 153 (78-75).
Freshman
Nick Erlichman (Shrewsbury, Mass./Shrewsbury) made the biggest move on the team in the second round, jumping up 16 places on the leaderboard after finishing with a two-over 74 (38-36). He and redshirt freshman
Chris Tull (Bluffton, S.C./Heritage Academy) are now in a five-way tie for 71st overall at 11-over 155. Tull posted a three-over 75 (36-39) on Tuesday, shaving five strokes off his first-round score.
The top five teams and the top two student-athletes not with a team from the regional championships will advance to the 2011 NCAA National Championships from May 16-20 at the Robert Trent Jones Golf Trail in Florence, Ala.
