PONCE, Puerto Rico (March 9) – The Vulcans opened their spring by finishing 10th in the team standings on Wednesday at the Caribbean Classic, which was hosted by St. Johns's (N.Y.) at the Costa Caribe Resort.
The California University of Pennsylvania men's golf team finished with a 49-over 913 (300-308-305) at the 12-team tournament. South Carolina Upstate claimed the invitational title after shooting a 17-under 847 (283-282-282) to finish 10 shots ahead of runner-up Johnson & Wales (Fla.). Freshman Adam Goins of USC Upstate earned medalist honors with a seven-under 209 (69-68-72).
Redshirt freshman
Chris Tull (Bluffton, S.C./Heritage Academy) was the Vulcans' top finisher, as he tied for 31st overall at six-over 222 (71-78-73) for the tournament. Freshman
Nick Erlichman (Shrewsbury, Mass./Shrewsbury) carded a 12-over 228 (79-76-73) in his college debut to tie for 43rd on the leaderboard.
Junior
Paul Babashanian (Chesapeake, Va./Great Bridge) posted a 17-over 233 (72-78-83) to place third on the team and tie for 52nd overall, while classmate
Austin Stoddard (Pittsfield, Pa./Youngsville) was close behind with a 20-over 236 (81-76-79) in Puerto Rico.
Sophomore
Justin Newbauer (Georgetown, Pa./South Side) carded a 22-over 238 (78-80-80) to finish tied for 59th at the three-round event. Redshirt freshman

Mike Yavorsky (Charleroi, Pa./Ringgold) and sophomore
Evan Matoske (Jensen Beach, Fla./Heritage Academy/Jensen Beach) carded back-to-back-to-back finishes on the learderboard. Jeffery posted a 25-over 241 (83-76-82), Yavorsky shot a 26-over 242 (84-80-78) and Matoske finished with a 27-over 243 (82-87-74).
Redshirt freshman
Campbell Quirk (Queensland, Australia/Sunshine Coast) and freshman
Dylan Firmstone (Greensburg, Pa./Mount Pleasant) each played in their second career tournament while in Puerto Rico. Quirk carded a 32-over 248 (82-87-79) and Firmstone registered a 43-over 259 (82-92-85) while playing in a field of 75 golfers.
The Vulcans return to the links when they compete at the Concord Invitational on March 19-20.
