No. 8 Vulcans power past Villanova, 9-0

CALIFORNIA (March 20) – The No. 8 Vulcans snapped their three-match losing streak in dominating fashion on Sunday morning, claiming a 9-0 victory over NCAA Division I Villanova at Roadman Park.

With the win, the California University of Pennsylvania tennis team improves to 12-7 overall, highlighted by wins over BIG EAST-members West Virginia and Villanova. Meanwhile, the Wildcats drop to 1-5 this season after losing matches at Pittsburgh and Duquesne earlier this weekend.

The Vulcans took an early 3-0 lead by sweeping doubles play on Sunday, losing only seven games in three matches. At the first position, 16th-ranked Annabel Pieschl (Gothenburg, Sweden/Katrinelund) and sophomore Jade Pondicas (Johannesburg, South Africa/British International Distance) posted an 8-4 victory against Mikelle Mancini and Kristin Gobberg. The tandem of juniors Axelle Fernandez (Toulouse, France/Institut Familial) and Anastassiya Zherdeva (Almaty, Kazakhstan/Gumnasia Number 60) earned an 8-2 win at second doubles over Allison Solberg and Emily Urda, while senior Laurie Navarro (Eysus, France/Jules Supervielle) and junior Franziska Steinhardt (Bad Lausick, Germany/St. Augustin Gymnasium) dealt an 8-1 defeat to Villanova's Sarah Kelly and Katherine Monari at the third slot.

Cal U continued its impressive play in singles action, winning all six matches in straight sets. Pieschl, the 20th-ranked player in the country, registered a 6-3, 6-4 victory at the first singles over Mancini. Pondicas collected her 20th singles win of the season by posting a 6-2, 6-1 victory over Solberg at the second slot and Steinhardt earned a 6-2, 6-0 victory against Amanda Nelson at the third position.

At fourth singles, Zherdeva recorded a 6-0, 6-1 win over Urda and Fernandez earned a 6-2, 6-0 victory at the fifth position over Alexandra Harding. Navarro rounded out the match with a 6-1, 6-3 win against Anne Cognetti at the sixth slot.

The Vulcans return to action on Friday, March 25, when they host Concordia (N.Y.) at 4 p.m.
