Women's Basketball falls to Bloomsburg, 77-68

CALIFORNIA (Dec. 4) – Despite a season-high 23 points by senior forward Amy Johns (McKeesport, Pa./McKeesport), the Vulcans dropped a 77-68 contest to Bloomsburg on Sunday afternoon in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Crossover play at the new Convocation Center.

With the loss, the California University of Pennsylvania women's basketball team falls to 3-3 this season with a 2-2 record in the league action. Meanwhile, the Huskies, who were the preseason favorite in the PSAC East, improve to 6-2 overall and 2-2 in conference play.

Johns scored 17 of her game-high 23 points in the second half and finished the game shooting 9-of-16 from the floor and five-of-seven from the free-throw line. She also posted her first double-double of the season, and seventh career, by tallying a team-high 11 rebounds. Johns has scored in double-figures in all six games this season and leads the team with 17.5 points per game.

Senior guard Danielle Luckett (Chicago, Ill./James Hubert Blake (Md.)) posted 11 points, four rebounds and three steals on Sunday, while sophomore guard Ryah Gadson (McKeesport, Pa./McKeesport) finished with 10 points. Junior Megan Kermond (Adelaide, Australia/Unley) and sophomore Elena Antonenko (Moscow, Russia/State University of Physical Education) added nine and seven points, respectively, off the bench.

Cal U took an early 14-4 lead in the opening six-plus minutes of the game with Luckett registering steals on the Huskies' first three possessions. Bloomsburg answered with an 8-0 run to take a 12-10 lead at the 13:21-mark before a three-pointer by Luckett gave Cal U a 13-12 lead midway through the half. The first half featured a combined seven lead changes with Bloomsburg leading by as many as seven points, 24-17, before taking a 36-35 lead at the break after Luckett made a jumper as time expired.

In the opening six minutes of the second half, the Huskies stretched their lead to 12 points, 50-38, with three-straight treys. With Bloomsburg leading 55-44, Cal U mounted a 13-2 run after Johns scored 10 points over four minutes to tie the game at 57-57 with 7:32 remaining. The Huskies then scored seven-straight points to take a 64-57 lead before expanding their lead to as many as 11 points, 75-64, with 1:36 left in the game.

Cal U finished the game shooting 47.3 percent (26-of-55) from the field, while only making 23.5 percent (4-of-17) from beyond the arc. In comparison, Bloomsburg made shot 44.8 percent (26-of-58) from the floor behind a staggering 15 three-pointers with 10 treys in the second half. Both teams registered 32 rebounds, but the Huskies held a 29-13 advantage in points off turnovers.

Bloomsburg sophomore Catherine Noack scored a team-high 17 points off the bench, while junior Lauren Ellis posted a double-double of 12 points and 10 rebounds. Senior guard Kelsey Gallagher, the reigning PSAC East Athlete of the Year, finished with 11 points, five rebounds and seven assists.

The Vulcans continue PSAC Crossover play next weekend, starting Friday, Dec. 9, when they travel to face Kutztown at 5:30 p.m.
