Vulcans cruise past East Stroudsburg, 83-51

EAST STROUDSBURG, Pa. (Dec. 10) – Behind a combined 40 points from senior forward Amy Johns (McKeesport, Pa./McKeesport) and junior guard Stephanie Michael (Morgantown, W.Va./Morgantown), the Vulcans cruised to an 83-51 victory over East Stroudsburg at Koehler Fieldhouse in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Crossover play on Saturday afternoon.

With the win, the California University of Pennsylvania women's basketball team improves to 5-3 this season with a 4-2 mark in league action. Meanwhile, East Stroudsburg drops to 3-5 overall and 1-5 in conference play.

Johns scored a season-high 22 points in only 19 minutes after making 9-of-11 attempts from the floor. She also finished with three rebounds and two assists against the Warriors. The All-PSAC West forward ranks among the top 10 in the league this year with a career-high 17.9 points per game.

Michael also established a season high by scoring 18 points in only her second start of the season. She shot 7-of-14 from the field, including four-of-nine from beyond the arc, on Saturday. Michael scored a combined 30 points in the last two days after entering the weekend with only 30 points through the first six games of the year.

Freshman Emma Mahady (Albury, Australia/Xavier) set season highs with 10 points and five rebounds while playing 24 minutes off the bench. Fellow newcomer Chelsea McKnight (Grove City, Ohio/Harvest Prep) finished with nine points and five steals off the bench, while forward Selena Adamshick (Harveys Lake, Pa./Lake Lehman) led the team with six rebounds (four offensive) and added six points and four steals in the win.

Cal U, which led the entire game, built an early 17-6 lead following a pair of free-throws by Mahady with 12:41 left in the first half. After the Warriors trimmed the deficit to seven points, the Vulcans mounted a 9-0 rally, capped with a layup by McKnight, to take a 27-12 lead at the 6:52-mark. Leading by double-digits for the remainder of the half, Cal U took a 45-27 lead into the break after scoring 26 points off turnovers during the first half.

Leading 51-35 early in the second half, the Vulcans mounted a 21-5 run over eight-plus minutes to stretch their lead to 32 points, 72-40, with 8:05 left in the game. Cal U opened the rally by forcing ESU into turnovers on six-straight possessions and 12 total during the eight-minute span. The Vulcans led by as many as 34 points, 77-43, in the second half before claiming the 83-51 victory.

Cal U finished the game shooting 44.6 percent (33-of-74) from the field, including 34.8 percent (8-of-23) from beyond the arc. For the game, the Vulcans out-scored the Warriors 45-6 in points off turnovers after ESU committed a season-high 39 turnovers. Cal U also held a sizeable 27-4 advantage in second-chance points after collecting 20 offensive rebounds on Saturday.

In the loss, senior guard Cyara Woodridge finished with a team-high 14 points on six-of-seven shooting, while sophomore guard Andrea Veres added 12 points.

The Vulcans are idle next week due to finals before returning to action on Dec. 18-19 at the Komen Shoot for the Cure Classic hosted by IUP at the Kovalchick Convention and Athletic Complex.
