CALIFORNIA (Nov. 5) – The No. 4 California University of Pennsylvania women's soccer team captured the first Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Tournament Championship in program history on Saturday afternoon with a 2-1 victory over No. 17 Kutztown in the title game at the new Soccer Facility.
With the win, the Vulcans improve to 18-0-2 overall and secure the league's automatic qualifier (AQ) to the upcoming NCAA Tournament next week. In its three games in the PSAC Tournament, Cal U out-scored its opponents by a 10-3 margin and will make its third-straight appearance in the NCAA Tournament after winning just four games in 2007. Meanwhile, Kutztown falls to 16-5 this year with two of its five losses coming to Cal U.
In the 36th minute, Cal U broke the scoreless tie when senior
Breeanna Robinson (East Hampstead, N.H./Pinkerton Academy) scored her 18th goal of the season off an assist from freshman
Erin Hogan (Beaver, Pa./Beaver ). Hogan is now tied with Audrey Dawson (1995) and
Bethany Smyda (2010) for second place in single-season school history with 11 assists. The Golden Bears answered with a goal just before halftime when senior Shannon Pennock tallied her second goal of the year at the 43:36-mark on a penalty kick, 1-1.
After the break, the Vulcans reclaimed the lead in the 78th minute when sophomore
Chelsea Norbuts (Monroeville, N.J./Woodstown) scored the game-winning goal (second of the year) off an assist from junior
Carley Work (Hopewell, Pa./Hopewell).
Following the game, Work was selected the PSAC Tournament MVP after posting eight points on three goals and two assists in three victories.
Senior goalkeeper
Paula Jackson (Kingston, Jamaica/Wolmer's Trust) finished with two saves to earn her ninth career post-season victory. Kutztown's Casey Behrendt registered seven saves in the losing effort.
The Vulcans held a 20-8 shot advantage after limiting the Golden Bears to just two shot attempts in the second period. Cal U also posted a 9-4 edge in corner kicks in the victory.
Cal U will likely serve as a host for the opening round of the NCAA Tournament after being the top-ranked team in Atlantic Region throughout the season. The Vulcans have posted an unblemished 13-0-0 home record this season and have out-scored their opponents by a 51-4 margin at the new Soccer Facility.
