Vulcans fall at Saint Rose in quarterfinals, 1-0

ALBANY, N.Y. (Nov. 20) – In the quarterfinals of the NCAA Tournament for the second time in three years, the No. 2 California University of Pennsylvania women's soccer team suffered a 1-0 loss at No. 10 Saint Rose (N.Y.) on Sunday afternoon at the Plumeri Sports Complex.

With the loss, Cal U finishes the season with a 20-1-2 overall record under fifth-year head coach Al Alvine. The loss also snaps the Vulcans' 30-game unbeaten streak (25-0-5) that dated back to Oct. 16, 2010. Meanwhile, Saint Rose improves to 22-1-1 this year and advances to the semifinals of the NCAA Tournament for the fourth-consecutive season.

After a scoreless first half, the Golden Knights took a 1-0 lead at the 47:59-mark when senior Gianna D'Errico scored her sixth goal of the year with assists from Carmelina Puopolo and Kimberly Morton.

Senior goalkeeper Paula Jackson (Kingston, Jamaica/Wolmer's Trust) set a season high and tied her career high with eight saves on Sunday. Jackson finished her career as the school's all-time leader with a 0.51 goals-against average (GAA), 55 wins and 34 shutouts. Saint Rose's Jessica Gerski posted one save to earn her sixth shutout of the year.

Cal U was limited to a season-low four shot attempts with one shot on goal. In comparison, the Golden Knights finished with 25 shots and held a 9-1 edge in corner kicks.

The Vulcans previously advanced to the quarterfinals of the NCAA Tournament in 2009, suffering a 1-0 loss to the Golden Knights.
