SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. (Oct. 15) – After dropping the first set on Saturday afternoon, the Vulcans posted a 3-1 win (17-25, 25-22, 25-16, 25-20) over Slippery Rock in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) West play.
With the victory, the California University of Pennsylvania volleyball team improves to 21-4 overall with an 11-2 mark in league action. After the first round of divisional play, the Vulcans are only one game behind of Gannon in the standings and lead the entire conference in overall wins. Meanwhile, The Rock drops to 19-6 this season with an 8-5 record in divisional play.
Junior
Meghan Franz (Cranberry Twp., Pa./Seneca Valley) led the team with 11 kills on 22 attempts for a .455 hitting percentage. Classmates
Brandy Harris (Bedford, Pa./Bedford) and
Chelsea Wilson (Bellwood, Pa./Bellwood Antis) each added nine kills on Saturday, while sophomore
Molly Delaney (Carmel, Ind./Westfield) and junior
Kelly Fromknecht (Erie, Pa./McDowell) both tallied eight kills in the win. Senior
Kortney Eshleman (Greencastle, Pa./Greencastle) and sophomore
Abbey Freund (Cottage Grove, Wis./Monona Grove) directed the offense with 21 assists each.
Senior libero
Sara McMullen (State College, Pa./State College) and Delaney anchored the defensive effort with 16 digs, while Harris and Freund collected 14 and 11 digs, respectively. Franz also recorded seven blocks at Slippery Rock.
