Women's Basketball rolls past ESU, 77-37

CALIFORNIA (Jan. 9) – The California University of Pennsylvania women's basketball team received a balanced scoring attack with four players reaching double-figures to register a 77-37 win over East Stroudsburg in the second game in as many days to close out Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Crossover play.

The Vulcans improve to 9-3 on the season with the victory, while the Warriors fall to 3-9. The 40-point win is the largest margin of victory for Cal U since it beat Wilmington (Del.) on Nov. 27 earlier this season.

Senior forward Kayla Smith (Elkins, W.Va./Elkins) paced the offense with 18 points on 8-of-10 shooting from the floor. She also finished with six rebounds, three assists and three steals in only 21 minutes, breaking her streak of four-straight double-doubles. Junior guard Danielle Luckett (Chicago, Ill./James Hubert Blake (Md.)) contributed 16 points, six assists and four steals.

Junior forward Amy Johns (McKeesport, Pa./McKeesport) and freshman guard Ryah Gadson (McKeesport, Pa./McKeesport) rounded out the Vulcans in double figures as each recorded 10 points.

The Vulcans took command early as they jumped out to a quick 16-5 after making their first seven shots with assists on each field-goal. After another basket by East Stroudsburg, Cal U maintained its double-digit lead for the remainder of the first half. The Vulcans took a 47-24 lead at the break after shooting over 62 percent from the field behind six three-pointers. Cal U also dominated on the glass, out-rebounding East Stroudsburg by a 21-6 margin and scoring 11 second-chance points in the first half.

Cal U stretched its lead to 30 points early in the second half. Towards the end of the game, the Vulcans scored 11-straight points to expand their lead to as many as 44 points, 77-33, with 1:45 remaining behind back-to-back treys from Michael.

The Vulcans finished the game shooting season-bests 51.6 percent from the floor (32-of-62) and 50.0 percent (8-of-16) from three-point territory. In comparison, the Warriors shot only 31.1 percent (14-of-45) from the field and made just 21.1 percent (4-of-19) from beyond the arc.

Cal U held a sizeable 40-23 margin in rebounds with 15 offensive rebounds leading to 17 second-chance points. The Vulcans forced the Warriors into 26 turnovers, collecting 15 steals with a combined 10 by Luckett, Smith and freshman Kate Seebohm (Millicent, Australia/Millicent).

East Stroudsburg was led by junior forward Brittany McClain with 16 points in the loss. She also grabbed six rebounds and collected four steals.

Cal U returns to action on Wednesday, Jan. 12, when it opens PSAC West play by hosting rival Edinboro at Hamer Hall for a 6 p.m. start. Live stats of the game will be available by clicking here.
