Cal U tops Gannon at Hammermill, 86-61

ERIE, Pa. (Jan. 22) – All five starters scored in double-figures on Saturday afternoon, as the California University of Pennsylvania women's basketball team earned an impressive 86-61 win over Gannon at the Hammermill Center in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) West play.

With their third-straight victory, the Vulcans improve to 12-4 overall and 3-1 in league action. Meanwhile, the Golden Knights fall to 8-7 this season with a 1-3 mark in PSAC West action. Cal U also snapped Gannon's 15-game win streak in home PSAC West games and earned its first victory over the Golden Knights at the Hammermill Center since the 1990-91 season (2-8 all-time).

Senior Kayla Smith (Elkins, W.Va./Elkins) tallied her 11th double-double of the season (55th career) behind game-high totals of 22 points (15 second half) and 10 rebounds (four offensive). She made all eight of her field-goal attempts and was six-of-eight from the free-throw line. The 5-10 forward also collected four assists and three steals against the Golden Knights.

Junior guard Danielle Luckett (Chicago, Ill./James Hubert Blake (Md.)) posted her second 20-point game of the season, scoring 20 points on 9-of-15 shooting from the floor and two-of-five from beyond the arc. Freshman guard Kate Seebohm (Millicent, Australia/Millicent) established a season high with 15 points, while junior forward Amy Johns (McKeesport, Pa./McKeesport) and sophomore guard Stephanie Michael (Morgantown, W.Va./Morgantown) finished with 12 and 10 points, respectively.

Johns, Luckett and Seebohm all tied Smith with a team-high four assists, while Luckett collected a team-best four steals at the Hammermill Center.

Leading 22-19 midway through the first half, the Vulcans scored nine-unanswered points to take a 31-19 lead on a fastbreak layup by Michael with 6:14 left before the break. Cal U later went on a 7-0 run to expand its first-half lead to as many as 16 points, 42-26, after Luckett made a layup with 1:20 left. The Vulcans took a 42-29 lead into halftime after hitting five treys and scoring 18 points off turnovers in the first half.

After Gannon made a traditional three-point play, Cal U responded with a 10-0 rally to take a 54-34 lead with 14:19 remaining. Midway through the second half, the Vulcans scored eight-unanswered points to expand their lead to 23 points, 64-41, at the 9:33-mark. The Golden Knights managed to trim the deficit to 16 points, 64-48, before the Vulcans sealed the win with an 11-2 run that was capped by a three-pointer from Luckett with 5:35 left in game.

The Vulcans posted their best shooting performance of the season, making 58.5 percent (31-of-53) from the field. Cal U also shot 42.9 percent (9-of-21) from beyond the arc and 78.9 percent (15-of-19) from the free-throw line. Meanwhile, the Golden Knights shot 45.8 percent (22-of-48) from the floor with seven treys and 71.4 percent (10-of-14) from the charity stripe.

As a team, Cal U collected 12 steals and forced 23 turnovers that were converted into 17 fastbreak points and 31 points off turnovers. The Vulcans also held a slim 28-26 advantage in rebounds and scored 30 points from in the paint.

Redshirt freshman forward Danielle Tucker led the Golden Knights with 17 points on 8-of-11 shooting and seven rebounds. Guard Caitlyn Lowe finished with 13 points and four assists, while forward Jennifer Papich added 12 points.

The Vulcans continue PSAC West play on Wednesday, Jan. 26, when they travel to Slippery Rock for a 6 p.m. start. Cal U has won all 17 meetings against The Rock since the 2002-03 season. Live stats of the game will be available by clicking here.
