CALIFORNIA (Jan. 19) – Three Vulcans scored in double-figures and senior forward
Kayla Smith (Elkins, W.Va./Elkins) recorded a season-high 27 points en route to a 93-59 Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) West victory over rival IUP on Wednesday night at Hamer Hall.
With the win, the California University of Pennsylvania women's basketball team improves to 11-4 overall this season and 2-1 in league play. Meanwhile, the Crimson Hawks fall to 10-5 and 2-1 in the PSAC West. Cal U has won four-straight against IUP and dating back to the 1988-89 season, the Vulcans have won 21 of the last 24 meetings at Hamer Hall.
Smith posted her 10th double-double of the season as she had a game-high 10 rebounds to go along with her 27 points. The 5-11 senior shot 12-of-16 from the floor and a perfect three-for-three from the charity stripe. The All-America candidate also added four assists, two blocks and two steals.
Sophomore guard
Danielle Luckett (Chicago, Ill./James Hubert Blake (Md.)) and junior forward
Amy Johns (McKeesport, Pa./McKeesport) joined Smith in double-digits with 19 and 17 points, respectively. Luckett shot 8-of-13 from the field and contributed five assists, four rebounds and four steals. Johns grabbed seven rebounds and added two assists to go along with her 17 points.
Trailing 16-14 six minutes in to the game, Cal U went on a 20-2 run that was started at the 13:21-mark by a three-pointer from sophomore guard
Stephanie Michael (Morgantown, W.Va./Morgantown) and capped off when Michael hit a step-back jumper at the 8:01-mark to give the Vulcans a 34-18 lead. Cal U kept the lead in double-digits for the remainder of the game and went in to the locker room up 12 points, 48-36.
Over the first five minutes of the second half, the Vulcans jumped out to a 14-4 run started by a Johns' jumper and ending on a Smith layup to stretch the lead to 22 points, 62-40, at the 15:02-mark. IUP closed the gap to as close as 14 points, 70-56, when sophomore Katelyn Marshall made two free-throws, but the Vulcans finished out the game on a 23-3 run that began with 8:06 remaining on two free-throws by freshman guard

Overall, Cal U shot 55.1 percent (38-of-69) from the floor while holding IUP to just 35.0 percent (21-of-60). The Vulcans dominated the interior, out-scoring the Crimson Hawks 48-22 from the paint and holding a 44-28 edge on the glass. IUP committed 23 turnovers, which Cal U converted into 31 points.

Cynthia Fullard (Morgantown, W.Va./Morgantown) contributed six rebounds, three assists and three steals.
