SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. (Sept. 24) – After being scoreless at halftime from an evenly played first period, the No. 13 California University of Pennsylvania women's soccer team controlled the second half and defeated Slippery Rock 3-0 in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) action on Friday.

With the win, the Vulcans move to 7-0-1 overall and 3-0-1 with 10 points in conference play for the year. The Rock falls to 4-3-0 overall and 2-3-0 against league opponents, giving them six points in the standings.

Cal U got on the scoreboard in the 62nd-minute when freshman forward Tonya Fabian (Jefferson Hills, Pa./Thomas Jefferson) beat her defender and tried to find classmate Bethany Smyda (Irwin, Pa./Penn-Trafford) on the cross, but the ball was kicked in by a Slippery Rock defender before reaching Smyda. A little over three minutes later, junior midfielder Chaning Wimer (Lititz, Pa./Manheim Township) tallied her second goal of the season, scoring over the outstretched arms of The Rock keeper from 25-yards out. Smyda capped off the scoring at the 77:48-mark with her sixth goal of the season off of an assist from junior midfielder Erin Feltz (Munhall, Pa./Steel Valley).

For the game, the Vulcans held a shot advantage of 12-8 with junior goalkeeper Paula Jackson (Kingston, Jamaica/Wolmer's Trust) making three saves. Jackson improves to 7-0-1 in 2010 while posting shutouts in five of the eight contests.

The Vulcans continue their two-day weekend road trip tomorrow, Saturday September 25, when they travel to Lock Haven to take on the Bald Eagles for a 4 p.m. contest.
