WEST LAFAYETTE, Ohio (Sept. 21) – Competing in the two-day, 14-team Atlantic Region Invitational, the Vulcans finished fifth in the team standings with a three-round score of 46-over 910 (305-303-302) on Tuesday at the River Greens Golf Course.
Clarion (288-287-285) and IUP (280-292-288) tied for first place in the standings after both shooting a four-under 860 at the event. The Crimson Hawks held the lead after the first two rounds before the Golden Eagles shot a three-under 285 in the final round to force the tie. Ohio Dominican finished 32 strokes back of the leaders at 28-over 892 (312-289-291), while West Virginia Wesleyan was only one stroke ahead of the Vulcans to place fourth in the standings at 45-over 909 (307-302-300).
Sophomore
Justin Newbauer (Georgetown, Pa./South Side) led the California University of Pennsylvania men's golf team and tied for ninth overall with a three-round score of four-over 220 (79-72-69). He has been the Vulcans' top finisher in each of the first two events this fall after playing in 11 events last year.
Junior
Paul Babashanian (Chesapeake, Va./Great Bridge) carded a nine-over 225 (74-75-76) to tie for 18th overall in a field of 70 golfers, while redshirt freshman
Chris Tull (Bluffton, S.C./Heritage Academy) finished tied for 39th overall at 17-over 233 (80-73-80).
Freshman
Mike Yavorsky (Monongahela, Pa./Ringgold) posted a 23-over 239 (76-83-80) to tie for 48th on the leaderboard, while classmate
Adam Jeffery (Bloomsburg, Pa./Central Columbia) shot a 25-over 241 (76-88-77) in his college debut.
IUP junior Brad Boyle claimed medalist honors by three strokes with a 10-under 206 after shooting under par in each round.
The Vulcans return to action next week when they compete at the inaugural Jay Jennison Memorial on Sept. 27-28 in St. Augustine, Fla.
