No. 8 Vulcans roll in season-opener, 6-1

GREENSBURG, Pa. (Sept. 2) – Senior Sam Regney (Monaca, Pa./Monaca) and freshman Tonya Fabian (Jefferson Hills, Pa./Thomas Jefferson) each scored a pair of goals on Thursday, as the No. 8 Vulcans claimed a 6-1 road win in their season-opener against Seton Hill.

The California University of Pennsylvania women's soccer team (1-0) has now won its last three season-openers winning the games by a combined score of 12-2. The game marked the first meeting between the Vulcans and Griffins (0-1) since October 2006 when Seton Hill claimed a 1-0 victory.

The Vulcans jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead in the 17th minute as Regney scored both her goals off assists from Fabian. At the 40:25-mark, Cal U expanded its lead when newcomer Kamilla Lillefjaere (Akershus, Norway/Wang Elite Sports Academy) recorded her first career goal off a feed from freshman Bethany Smyda (Irwin, Pa./Penn-Trafford). Less than two minutes later, Bethany Smyda tallied a goal on a pass from Lillefjaere to give Cal U a sizeable 4-0 advantage at the break.

Fabian expanded the lead to 5-0 with a pair of goals in the first eight-plus minutes of the second half. She scored her first career goal off a feed from junior transfer Sara Di Benedetto (Maple, Ontario/St. Elizabeth Catholic) in the 50th minute before Regney assisted on a goal at the 53:23-mark. The Griffins avoided the shutout when sophomore Mackiesh Taylor scored in the 83rd minute.

Junior Paula Jackson (Kingston, Jamaica/Wolmer's Trust) made two saves in 70-plus minutes of shutout action in goal, while newcomer Ashley Smyda (Irwin, Pa./Penn-Trafford) allowed one goal in her college debut. Seton Hill goalkeeper Bethany Winter registered 13 saves, but was roughed up for six goals.

The Vulcans held a dominant 30-4 advantage in shots and also maintained a sizeable 10-1 edge in corner kicks.
