CALIFORNIA (Sept. 18) – After trailing by a goal at the end of the first period, the No. 20 California University of Pennsylvania women's soccer team scored five-unanswered goals in the second period by five different players to post a 5-1 win over Mercyhurst in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) action on Saturday at Roadman Park.
With the win, the Vulcans move to 5-0-1 and 2-0-1 with seven points in PSAC play. Meanwhile, the Lakers fall to 5-2-0 with a 2-2-0 mark and six points in PSAC action.
At the 17:22-mark, Mercyhurst tallied its only goal of the game when junior Molly Marsh scored on a rebound after junior goalkeeper
Paula Jackson (Kingston, Jamaica/Wolmer's Trust) made the initial stop on the Lakers' attack. The two teams played out the first half with Cal U holding a slim 11-8 shot advantage.
In the second half, the Vulcans found their scoring stroke. Junior
Kayla Klimasko (Mississauga, Ontario/Woodlands Secondary) tied the game at 1-1 with her first career goal in the 55th minute from 35 yards out off a pass from classmate
Kristen Orrett (Pickering, Ontario/Pickering). A little over a minute later, Orrett gave the Vulcans their first lead of the game when she scored her first goal since 2008 off of a pass from freshman

Sara Di Benedetto (Maple, Ontario/St. Elizabeth Catholic) made it a 3-1 contest when she tallied a goal off a pass from freshman

Carina Honeygosky (Pittsburgh, Pa./Baldwin) in the 70th minute to extend the Cal U lead to 4-1. Newcomer
Chelsea Norbuts (Monroeville, N.J./Woodstown) put the exclamation point on the victory, tallying her first career goal on a header with assists from junior
Jodi McDonald (Ajax, Ontario/Ajax) and Fabian with seven seconds remaining in the game.
Jackson earned her fifth win of the season after posting six saves on Saturday. Mercyhurst goalkeeper Rachel Griepsma tallied eight saves and allowed five goals while playing all 90 minutes.
After taking 14 shots in the second period, Cal U out-shot Mercyhurst by a 25-12 margin and held a 10-2 advantage in corner kicks.
The Vulcans return to action on Tuesday, Sept. 21, when they travel to Elkins, W.Va., for a non-conference game against Davis & Elkins – the first of three road games next week.
