CLARION, Pa. (Sept. 13) – Sophomore
Justin Newbauer (Georgetown, Pa./South Side) finished with a six-over 150 (71-79) , as the California University of Pennsylvania men's golf team opened its season on Monday at the Hal Hansen Invitational hosted by Clarion.
The Vulcans finished tied with West Virginia Wesleyan for sixth place in the team standings with a 42-over 618 (308-310). IUP won the invitational by five strokes with an 18-over 594 (297-297), while Clarion's Jared Schmader earned medalist honors with a five-under 139 (65-74) after setting the course record at seven-under 65 in the first round on Sunday.
Newbauer opened the tournament tied for second after shooting a one-under 71 before carding a seven-over 79 on Monday. He finished the 15-team invitational in a three-way tie for eighth overall on the leaderboard.
Juniors
Paul Babashanian (Chesapeake, Va./Great Bridge) and
Austin Stoddard (Pittsfield, Pa./Youngsville) both completed the 36-hole invitational with scores of 13-over 157 and tied for 39th overall. Babahanian shaved three strokes off his first round score (80-77), while Stoddard shot nearly identical rounds at six-over 78 and seven-over 79.
Newcomer
Mike Yavorsky (Monongahela, Pa./Ringgold) shot a 14-over 158 (83-75) in his college debut to tie for 46th overall, while redshirt freshman
Chris Tull (Bluffton, S.C./Heritage Academy) finished tied for 51st on the leaderboard at 15-over (79-80).
