CALIFORNIA (April 10) – The No. 8 California University of Pennsylvania tennis team remains in a tie for first place in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) West standings after posting a 9-0 victory against Clarion on Saturday afternoon at the new tennis complex at Roadman Park.
With the sweep, the Vulcans improve to 4-0 in divisional action and 18-5 overall this season after winning seven-straight matches. Meanwhile, the Golden Eagles drop to 3-7 this year and remain winless in league play at 0-4.
Cal U took a 3-0 lead after sweeping doubles play for the 12th time this season, losing only two games in the three matches. At first doubles, freshman

Nina Kowalski (Hofheim, Germany/Man Taunus) blanked Jaclyn Metzger and Devin Rombach. Junior
Galina Vishnikina (Almaty, Kazakhstan/Sport Military) and sophomore
Alina Stanila (Alexandria, Romania/Technical) collected an 8-2 victory over Haylee Gardner and Megan Parson, while freshman
Jade Pondicas (Johannesburg, South Africa/British International Distance) and sophomore
Anastassiya Zherdeva (Almaty, Kazakhstan/Gumnasia Number 60) registered an 8-0 win against Michaela Hardy and Alysia Sturdivant.
In singles action, the Vulcans posted six straight-set victories and lost only five games in the six matches. Bornefled earned her 15th-consecutive win, defeating Metzger 6-2, 6-0 at the first position. Zherdeva, the 28th-ranked player in the country, dealt Gardner a 6-2, 6-0 defeat at the second slot and Stanila posted a 6-0, 6-0 victory against Rombach.
Kowalski topped Parsons at fourth singles, 6-1, 6-0, while Pondicas improved to 17-2 this year following a 6-0, 6-0 win at the fifth slot over Hardy. Sophomore
Axelle Fernandez (Toulouse, France/Institut Familial) won her seventh-straight match after defeating Andi Gibson at the sixth position, 6-0, 6-0.
Five-time defending-PSAC West champion Cal U concludes the regular season on Tuesday, April 13, when it hosts Slippery Rock at 3:30 p.m. Both the Vulcans and The Rock are tied for first place in the PSAC West standings.
