Men's Golf finishes fourth at Concord

DANIELS, W.Va. (March 21) – Paced by top-15 individual finishes from sophomores Paul Babashanian (Chesapeake, Va./Great Bridge) and Austin Stoddard (Pittsfield, Pa./Youngsville), the Vulcans finished in fourth place with a 38-over 614 (307-307) on Sunday at the 13-team Concord Invitational played at the Glade Springs Resort.

The California University of Pennsylvania men's golf team shot a 19-over 307 in both rounds of the invitational. The host Mountain Lions captured the tournament title by five strokes with a 24-over 600 (305-295) after junior Emmanuel Charmat claimed medalist honors in a playoff. Charmat and teammate Johan Isberg finished the two rounds tied for the lead with a four-under 140.

Babashanian totaled seven birdies over two rounds to finish in a four-way tie for ninth place at six-over 150 (75-75). Stoddard carded an eight-over 152 (75-77) after posting 22 pars in the two rounds to finish 13th overall in a field of 75 golfers.

Junior Eric Smith (Lancaster, Pa./Manheim Township) tied for 21st place at 12-over 156 (76-80), while freshman James Currie (Worcester, England/Malvern) shot a 78 in the second round to finish with a 15-over 159 (81-78). Senior Bryan Bustamante (Greensburg, Pa./Greensburg Salem) rounded out the scorers for Cal U after shaving seven shots off his first-round total to card a 17-over 161 (84-77).

Freshmen Evan Matoske (Jensen Beach, Fla./Heritage Academy/Jensen Beach) and Justin Newbauer (Georgetown, Pa./South Side) both played as individuals over the weekend. Matoske finished tied for 32nd place at 15-over 159 (84-75), while Newbauer shaved eight strokes off his first-round score to finish tied for 64th overall at 24-over 168 (88-80).

The Vulcans are idle for over two weeks before returning to action on Thursday, April 8 at the Carnegie Mellon Invitational. The event is scheduled for a 10 a.m. start at the Longue Vue Country Club.
