Cal U falls to Coastal Carolina, WVU

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. (March 14) – Playing against a pair of NCAA Division I opponents, the Vulcans suffered 4-3 losses to both Coastal Carolina and West Virginia on Saturday at the Ridgeview Racquet Club.

With the losses, the California University of Pennsylvania tennis team falls to 11-5 this season. Coastal Carolina now stands at 11-1 and West Virginia improves to 11-2 this season before the two teams play each other on Tuesday.

Against the Chanticleers, the Vulcans trailed 1-0 after being swept in doubles play. In the closest doubles match, freshmen Jutta Bornefeld (Varel, Germany) and Jade Pondicas (Johannesburg, South Africa) suffered an 8-6 loss at the second position to Coastal Carolina's Paty Cortes and Mary Hill.

In singles play, Bornefeld claimed a 6-4, 6-1 victory at the third slot against Kim Webb. At the fourth position, 29th-ranked Alina Stanila (Alexandria, Romania/Technical) dealt Cortes a 6-3, 6-3 defeat, while Pondicas collected a 6-1, 6-0 win over the Chanticleers' Maria Camberos at fifth singles.

The match at second singles featured a pair of nationally-ranked players in 117th-ranked Miki Bunea of Coastal Carolina and 36th-ranked Nina Kowalski (Hofheim, Germany/Man Taunus). Bunea, who played on a NCAA Tournament team in Virginia Commonwealth as a freshman, posted a 6-3, 7-5 victory against Kowalski.

Against the host Mountaineers, Cal U trailed 1-0 after doubles play despite an 8-7 victory by sophomore Mariana Oliveira (Sao Paulo, Brazil/Martha Falcao) and Anastassiya Zherdeva (Almaty, Kazakhstan) at third doubles over Liv Pettersson and Ashley Pilsbury.

Playing at No. 1 singles for only the second match of her career, Zherdeva claimed a 6-3, 6-3 victory over WVU senior Stephanie LaFortune. Bornefeld earned her 12th singles win of the spring by dealing Veronica Cardenas a 7-5, 6-3 defeat at the third position. Pondicas posted her second victory of the day following a 6-3, 6-3 win over Pettersson at fifth singles.

Cal U is idle for a week before returning to action next Wednesday, March 24, when it travels to Pittsburgh to face No. 11 Carnegie Mellon, a NCAA Division III opponent.
