CALIFORNIA (Feb. 3) – Senior guard Brooque Williams (Pittsburgh, Pa./Perry) and junior forward Kayla Smith (Elkins, W.Va./Elkins) each posted double-doubles and combined for 45 points and 24 rebounds on Wednesday night, as the No. 22 California University of Pennsylvania women's basketball team cruised to a 97-47 victory over Slippery Rock at Hamer Hall in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) West action.

With the win, the nationally-ranked Vulcans improve to 16-4 overall and remain in second place in the league standings with a 6-1 divisional mark. Cal U remains in second place in the latest NCAA Atlantic Regional rankings, which were released just prior to tip-off, behind No. 3 and undefeated Gannon. Meanwhile Slippery Rock drops to 4-16 this season with a 1-6 record in league play. Since the start of the 2002-03 season, the Vulcans have won all 16 meetings against The Rock.

Williams led four players in double figures with 23 points on 8-of-15 shooting from the floor and six-of-six from the free-throw line. The 5-8 senior guard set the all-time school mark with 357 career free-throw made, breaking the previous mark of 355 set former All-American Sara McKinney (2002-05). Williams also collected 11 rebounds (five offensive), six assists and eight steals against The Rock. Williams is now tied for fourth place in league history with 378 career steals and also moved passed Clarion's Mona Gaffney for 13th place in all-time scoring in the PSAC with 1,932 career points.

Smith recorded her sixth-straight double-double (16th of the season) behind 22 points and 13 rebounds (six offensive). The three-year starter now ranks ninth in school history with 1,366 career points, as she surpassed Cal U Hall of Fame inductee Denise Hearn (1981-85) on Wednesday. Against Slippery Rock, Smith made 11-of-14 attempts from the field and posted a pair of blocks.

Redshirt sophomore Amy Johns (McKeesport, Pa./McKeesport/Xavier) finished with 19 points, seven rebounds and three steals, while redshirt freshman guard Kiara Brown (Ambridge, Pa./Ambridge) added 11 points off the bench.

Leading by five points midway through the first half, the Vulcans seized control of the game with a 12-5 run to take a 32-16 lead following a three-pointer by Williams with 6:09 left before the break. During the run, Cal U forced six turnovers and allowed Slippery Rock to make only one field goal. After The Rock hit a three-pointer, the Vulcans countered with points on eight-straight possessions to mount an impressive 19-3 run to take a 51-22 lead into halftime.

In the first half, Cal U scored 15 second-chance points on 14 offensive rebounds and also forced Slippery Rock into 17 turnovers.

After The Rock scored the first points of the second half, the Vulcans answered by going on a 21-4 run over a nine-plus minute span to stretch their lead to 43 points with 10:35 remaining. Playing reserves for the final five minutes of the game, Cal U eventually expanded their lead to as many as 50 points, 97-47, in the final minute on a lay-up by sophomore guard Danielle Luckett (Chicago, Ill./James Hubert Blake).

In the win, Cal U posted its best shooting performance in nearly a month by making 51.3 percent (40-of-78) of its shots from the floor. The Vulcans also shot 80.0 percent (12-of-15) from the free-throw line. Meanwhile, the Rock shot only 32.0 percent (16-of-50) from the field and made 71.4 percent (10-of-14) from the charity stripe.
