CALIFORNIA (Feb. 20) – Behind a season-high 19 rebounds by the nation's leading rebounder
Kayla Smith (Elkins, W.Va./Elkins), the Vulcans cruised to an 80-44 victory on Senior Day against Edinboro in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) West play at Hamer Hall.
With the victory, the California University of Pennsylvania women's basketball team took sole possession of second place in the league standings with a 9-3 divisional mark and 19-6 overall record. Meanwhile, Edinboro remains in fourth place at 15-10 overall and 6-6 in league play. The Vulcans have swept the season series with the Fighting Scots five times in the last seven seasons.
Senior guard
Brooque Williams (Pittsburgh, Pa./Perry) scored a game-high 25 points (15 in the first half)to move into 10th place in PSAC history with 2,034 career points. She surpassed the total of 2,019 points set by 2003 National Player of the Year
Becky Siembak, who played for both Slippery Rock and Cal U from 1999-04. Williams also tallied eight rebounds, four assists and eight steals on Saturday in her final regular-season home game at Hamer Hall.
Smith registered her 20th double-double of the season (25 games) behind 14 points and 19 rebounds (seven offensive). She also posted four assists, four steals and two blocks against the Fighting Scots.
Redshirt sophomore
Amy Johns (McKeesport, Pa./McKeesport/Xavier) added 13 points, six rebounds and five steals, while senior guard
Crystal Andrews (Johnstown, Pa./Johnstown/Pitt-Johnstown) finished with eight points and three assists. Andrews now ranks tied for fifth in program history with former All-American
Sara McKinney with 423 career assists.
The Vulcans took an early 14-4 lead in the first four-plus minutes of the game before the Fighting Scots cut the deficit to 20-19 with 9:19 left before halftime. In the final 4:45 of the opening half, Cal U mounted a 12-3 rally to take a 40-29 lead at the break with 22 points off turnovers in the first half.
Cal U expanded its lead to 20 points, 52-32 In the opening minutes of the second half. Edinboro countered by trimming the lead to 14 points before the Vulcans scored 19-unanswered points over seven-plus minutes to take a 71-38 with 5:05 remaining. During its scoreless streak, Edinboro missed 11-straight shots from the floor and committed seven turnovers.
Against Edinboro, the Vulcans finished shooting 44.8 percent (30-of-67) from the field but failed to make a three-pointer for the first time since Nov. 16, 2008. Meanwhile, the Fighting Scots made just 29.3 percent (17-of-58) of their shots – their second-lowest performance of the season.
Edinboro sophomore Renee' Brown scored a team-high 12 points and senior guard Samantha Reimer finished with only nine points, almost nearly 10 points less than her season average.
Behind 19 rebounds by Smith, Cal U posted a sizeable 48-34 margin on the glass with 22 offensive rebounds. The Vulcans collected 20 steals after forcing the Fighting Scots into a season-high 34 turnovers. Cal U finished with 42 points off turnovers and scored 24 fastbreak points.
The Vulcans look to clinch a second seed in the PSAC Tournament on Wednesday, Feb. 24, when they travel to face Slippery Rock at 8 p.m. With the second seed, Cal U would host a quarterfinal game against the third seed in the PSAC West.
