LOCK HAVEN, Pa. (Feb. 13) – The No. 23 Vulcans scored 50 points in the second half to snap their two-game skid in impressive fashion on Saturday, finishing with an 83-44 victory at Lock Haven in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) West play at Thomas Fieldhouse.
The California University of Pennsylvania women's basketball team improves to 17-6 overall and 7-3 in league action this season. With the win, the Vulcans avoided their first three-game losing streak since February 2008. Meanwhile, the Bald Eagles fall to 5-15 overall this year and remain winless in divisional play at 0-9.
Senior guard
Brooque Williams (Pittsburgh, Pa./Perry) posted one of her best performances of the season, finishing with 23 points (15 in the second half) and 13 rebounds to record her 10th double-double this year. She also collected a season-high seven assists and seven steals while committing no turnovers. The Pittsburgh native shot 8-of-18 from the floor and 7-of-10 from the free-throw line against Lock Haven on Saturday. Williams enters the final two weeks of the regular season only 18 points shy of becoming the second 2,000-point scorer in school history and ninth in league history.
Junior forward
Kayla Smith (Elkins, W.Va./Elkins) recorded her eight-straight double-double after posting 21 points and 13 rebounds against the Bald Eagles. The West Virginia native made 8-of-10 attempts from the field and five-of-seven from the charity stripe. Smith, who entered week as the nation's leading rebounder, is the only player in the PSAC averaging a double-double behind 16.2 points and 12.2 rebounds per game.
Freshman guard
Mona Rowe (Morgantown, W.Va./University) added 10 points off the bench, while sophomore guard
Danielle Luckett (Chicago, Ill./James Hubert Blake) posted seven points and three assists in the win.
Midway through the first half, the Vulcans mounted a 13-2 rally to build a 20-point lead, 31-11, with 7:10 left before the break. However, the Bald Eagles scored 16 of the final 18 points in the half to the cut the deficit to 33-27 at the break.
Cal U built its lead back to double-digits in the opening five minutes of the second half and took a 57-39 lead with 10:08 remaining after posting a 16-7 run over a four-minute span. After a jumper by sophomore Peaches Nesmith, the Vulcans sealed the win in dominating fashion by out-scoring the Bald Eagles 26-3 over the final 9:13 of the game. During the game-closing run, Lock Haven made only 1-of-13 attempts from the field, missed their final seven shots and committed five turnovers.
The Vulcans finished with one of their finest shooting performances of the season, making 50.8 percent (31-of-61) from the field and 73.9 percent (17-of-23) from the free-throw line. In stark contrast, the Bald Eagles shot only 27.6 percent (16-of-58) from the floor and 58.3 percent (7-of-12) from the charity stripe.
In the loss, senior guard Casi Donelan scored a team-high 11 points before fouling out. Junior forward Kristen Kudrick, the team's leading scorer and rebounder, was limited to five points and four rebounds on Saturday.
With 13 rebounds from both Smith and Williams, Cal U held a 43-33 advantage on the glass and out-scored Lock Haven by a 34-14 margin from in the paint. The Vulcans collected 16 steals and scored 28 points after forcing the Bald Eagles into 25 turnovers.
The Vulcans return to Hamer Hall for a two-game homestand, beginning Wednesday, Feb. 17, when they host rival IUP at 6 p.m. Cal U has won the last four regular-season meetings against IUP, including a 69-60 victory earlier this season at IUP.
