Vulcans drop season finale in shootout, 4-3

SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. (Oct. 30) – The California University of Pennsylvania men's soccer team finished the regular season with a 4-3 loss on Saturday at Shippensburg in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) play. 

The Vulcans end the regular season with an 11-5-2 overall record and a 2-5-2 mark in PSAC play. The Vulcans will now await the conclusion of conference tournaments to see if they will receive an at-large bid to the NCAA Tournament as one of the top-four teams in the Atlantic Region. Shippensburg improves to 13-5-0 overall and 6-3-0 in the league. 

The Raiders tallied the first goal at the 30:32-mark when sophomore Taylor Hudson was able to beat Cal U senior goalkeeper Derek Yobbi (South Park, Pa./South Park). The Vulcans answered back with the next two goals as junior Brady Sanders (Level Green, Pa./Penn-Trafford) scored off of an assist from freshman Christopher Karns (Mars, Pa./Mars) at 41:36 and freshman Russell Bootwright (Richmond, Va./Mills E. Godwin) added his team-leading eighth goal of the year off of a corner kick by sophomore Nemanja Visekruna (Hamilton, Ontario/St. Thomas More) in the 57th minute.

Shippensburg would score the next three goals before Viskeruna capped the scoring with his sixth goal of the season coming on a penalty kick at the 80:25-mark. 

The Vulcans out-shot the Raiders 23-12 and held a 3-1 edge on corner kicks for the game.

Yobbi took the loss in goal to drop his season record to 11-5-2 despite making four saves on the evening. 

The Vulcans will now wait to see if they will receive an at-large bid to the NCAA Tournament for the third time in school history (2004, 2008).
