CALIFORNIA (Oct. 2) – Freshman Bethany Smyda (Irwin, Pa./Penn-Trafford) scored her 10th goal of the season less than four minutes into overtime, as the No. 7 Vulcans were able to fend off No. 25 Kutztown, 1-0, in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) action at Roadman Park on Saturday afternoon.

The California University of Pennsylvania women's soccer team improves to 10-0-1 overall on the season with a 6-0-1 record in league play. With 19 points in the conference, the Vulcans are alone atop the PSAC standings. Nationally-ranked Kutztown falls to 7-3-0 overall in 2010 and 4-3-0 in conference action. The 12 points for the Golden Bears put them in a three-way tie for sixth place.

Cal U held a large edge in both shots, 25-8, and corner kicks, 9-0, in the contest. The host Vulcans held advantages of 14-5 on shots and 7-0 on corner kicks at halftime.

The Vulcans' two best scoring chances in regulation came two minutes into the first half and during the 89th minute. With 1:57 having elapsed in the game, Smyda found herself loose behind the defense and fired a shot on goal but Kutztown keeper Casey Behrendt was able to get a glove on the ball and deflect it off the crossbar and over the net. With 15 seconds remaining in regulation, senior Sam Regney (Monaca, Pa./Monaca) lined up for a corner kick and sophomore Carley Work (Hopewell, Pa./Hopewell) was able to get a shot off that Behrendt deflected away as time expired.

In overtime, the Vulcans kept consistent pressure on the Golden Bears. Three minutes into the period, junior Elizabeth Johnston (Munhall, Pa./Steel Valley) sent a header over the net off of a corner kick by classmate Darija Davidson (Courtice, Ontario/St. Stephen's). Less than a minute later, Smyda took her second chance alone with the keeper and made the most of it. Davidson made a pass to junior Erin Feltz (Munhall, Pa./Steel Valley) who then found Smyda cutting to the goal and was able to score in the lower left corner for her third career game-winner.

Goalkeeper Paula Jackson (Kingston, Jamaica/Wolmer's Trust) posted her seventh shutout of the season while making four saves to improving her record to 10-0-1. The junior's goals-against average (GAA) falls to 0.19 on the season. She has only allowed two goals in over 960 minutes of play.

The Vulcans return to action on Wednesday, Oct. 6, when No. 13 Bloomsburg (5-1-2, 4-1-1 PSAC) comes to Roadman Park for a 4 p.m. match-up. Live stats for the game will be available by clicking here.
