Vulcans finish sixth at PSAC Championships

HUMMELSTOWN, Pa. (Oct. 17) – Junior Paul Babashanian (Chesapeake, Va./Great Bridge) finished tied for seventh overall on the leaderboard and the California University of Pennsylvania men's golf team finished sixth in the team standings with a 69-over 645 (326-319) at the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Championships on Sunday at the Hershey Links.

After ranking fourth in the standings yesterday, the Vulcans dropped to sixth place after shooting a 31-over 319 on Sunday. IUP won its fourth-straight conference title by 20 strokes after shooting a 16-over 592 (303-289), featuring four players in the top seven of the leaderboard. West Chester (311-301-612) finished only one stroke ahead of Clarion (315-298-613) for second place after the Golden Eagles shaved 17 strokes off their first-round score.

With his individual finish, Babashanian earned All-PSAC honors for the second-straight year. After opening the tournament with a six-over 78, he cut five strokes off his score on Sunday to move into a three-way tie for seventh overall at seven-over 151 (78-73). Babashanian finished the fall season with a team-best scoring average of 75.7 and was the team's top finisher in the last three events.

Redshirt freshman Chris Tull (Bluffton, S.C./Heritage Academy) finished second on the team and tied for 19th overall with a 17-over 161 (81-80). Freshman Adam Jeffery (Bloomsburg, Pa./Central Columbia) and sophomore Justin Newbauer (Georgetown, Pa./South Side) were only one stroke apart on the leaderboard, as Jeffery carded a 23-over 167 (86-81) to finish 28th overall and Newbauer shot a 24-over 168 (81-87) to tie for 29th place.

Freshman Mike Yavorsky (Monongahela, Pa./Ringgold) rounded the Cal U golfers at the event, shooting a 27-over 171 (86-85) to finish 32nd overall.

IUP's Sean Sweithelm captured the medalist honors at one-over 145 (76-69) after carding a tournament-best three-under 69 on Sunday.

The Vulcans are set to open their spring season in Hawai'i, while competing in the Kaua'i Collegiate Cup on March 11-12.
