MILLERSVILLE, Pa. (Oct. 13) – Freshmen
Kamilla Lillefjaere (Akershus, Norway/Wang Elite Sports Academy) and
Bethany Smyda (Irwin, Pa./Penn-Trafford) each had big days, as the No. 4 California University of Pennsylvania women's soccer team rolled to a 7-1 win at Millersville in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) play on Wednesday.
With the victory, Cal U moves to 13-0-1 overall and 9-0-1 in league play for 28 points in the PSAC standings. The conference-leading Vulcans have achieved the program's highest ranking when the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) announced the one-place move to No. 4 in this week's NSCAA Top 25 poll. Meanwhile, Millersville drops to 1-11-1 overall and 0-9-1 in the PSAC.
Lillefjaere posted a career day for the Vulcans, tallying seven points with two goals and three assists. The reigning PSAC Athlete of the Week,
Bethany Smyda also scored twice to bring her conference-leading total to 14, which ties her for fifth in single-season school history.
Millersville struck first, scoring at the 9:48-mark. Lindsay Wilson was able to beat junior goalkeeper
Paula Jackson (Kingston, Jamaica/Wolmer's Trust) to put the Marauders out in front. Smyda scored the first of seven unanswered goals 11 minutes later when she took a pass from sophomore
Carley Work (Hopewell, Pa./Hopewell) to knot the game up at 1-1. Junior
Erin Feltz (Munhall, Pa./Steel Valley) put the Vulcans ahead for good at the 30:16-mark with Lillefjaere setting her up. Smyda's second goal of the game came just shy of the 65th-minute after junior
Kristen Orrett (Pickering, Ontario/Pickering) set up the freshman.
The fourth and fifth Vulcan goals came just 28-seconds apart, the second fastest back-to-back goals of the season. At the 71:12-mark, freshman
Chelsea Norbuts (Monroeville, N.J./Woodstown) tallied her second goal of the season on Lillefjaere's second assist. Seconds later, Lillefjaere scored her first goal of the contest off of a pass from
Bethany Smyda. Cal U used the quick-strike ability again for the sixth and seventh goals of the evening. Lillefjaere's second goal of the game came early in the 83rd minute off of an assist from fellow freshman
Christy Smyda (Irwin, Pa./Penn-Trafford). Just under a minute and a half later, sophomore
Kayla Fransko (Monongahela, Pa./Ringgold) tallied her fourth goal of 2010 with Lillefjaere posting her third assist of the contest.
For the game, Cal U held a dominant 38-7 advantage on shots and 6-0 edge on corner kicks. So far in 2010, the Vulcans are outscoring opponents by a combined 51-5 margin while averaging over 26 shots per game.
Jackson made three saves in 90 minutes of action, improving her record to 13-0-1. The early goal marks just the fourth allowed in 2010 by the junior in over 1,200 minutes of play.
