CALIFORNIA (Oct. 1) – Behind two goals and an assist from senior
Sam Regney (Monaca, Pa./Monaca), the No. 7 California University of Pennsylvania women's soccer team cruised to a 6-0 victory against Mansfield at Roadman Park on Friday afternoon in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) play.
With the win, the Vulcans remain unbeaten and improve to 9-0-1 overall with a 5-0-1 league mark. For the season, Cal U has out-scored its opponents by an incredible 40-3 margin after totaling seven shutouts. Meanwhile, Mansfield falls to 1-6-1 overall and 0-5-1 in conference action this year.
Regney started the offensive attack early for Cal U, scoring in the fifth minute of the game on a direct kick. At the 10:05-mark, junior
Kayla Klimasko (Mississauga, Ontario/Woodlands Secondary) tallied her second goal of the season off a header following a corner kick by Regney. Only 19 seconds later at the 10:24-mark, freshman
Bethany Smyda (Irwin, Pa./Penn-Trafford) collected her team-leading ninth goal of the year with an assist from senior
Carina Honeygosky (Pittsburgh, Pa./Baldwin). The Vulcans added to their lead in the closing seconds before halftime when sophomore Carley Wok (Hopewell, Pa./Hopewell) scored off a pass from junior
Darija Davidson (Courtice, Ontario/St. Stephen's), 4-0.
After the break, the Vulcans registered a pair of second-half goals. Regney posted her second goal of the day and seventh of the season on a corner kick in the 64th minute before sophomore
Kayla Fransko (Monongahela, Pa./Ringgold) scored at the 76:35-mark with an assist from freshman
Chelsea Norbuts (Monroeville, N.J./Woodstown).
The Vulcans dominated field position, out-shooting the Mountaineers by a 38-2 margin after holding Mansfield without a shot in the first half. Cal U also held an overwhelming 12-0 advantage in corner kicks.
Junior
Paula Jackson (Kingston, Jamaica/Wolmer's Trust) earned the win in net, making saves on both shot attempts she face in 90 minutes. Mansfield's Alexis Wilhelm allowed three goals in 23-plus minutes before senior Samantha DeLiere recorded 14 saves in nearly 70 minutes of action.
