No. 19 Cal U defeats Cheyney, 80-66

CHEYNEY, Pa. (Jan. 9) – Senior guard Brooque Williams (Pittsburgh, Pa./Perry) scored 20 points and freshman guard Stephanie Michael (Morgantown, W.Va./Morgantown) added 12 points, seven rebounds and five assists in her first career start to help lead the No. 19 California University of Pennsylvania women's basketball team to an 80-66 victory over Cheyney at Cope Hall in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Crossover action on Saturday.

Featuring two first-time starters, the Vulcans improve to 9-3 overall and 5-1 on the road this season. Meanwhile, the Wolves, who were playing their home-opener, fall to 3-7 this year.

Williams scored a game-high 20 points on 7-of-14 attempts from the field and six-of-seven from the free-throw line. She also collected six rebounds, three assists and four steals in 29 minutes. The Pittsburgh native, who ranks third in the league in scoring this season, has posted six 20-point games this year and 42 times in her career.

Michael posted a season-high 12 points on four-of-seven shooting from the floor with four three-pointers. The 5-6 freshman from Morgantown added seven rebounds and five assists. Michael and sophomore transfer Taryn Russ (Winchester, Va./John Handley/North Carolina A&T) both made the first starts of their careers on Saturday.

Redshirt freshman guard Kiara Brown (Ambridge, Pa./Ambridge) scored 15 points off the bench, while junior forward Kayla Smith (Elkins, W.Va./Elkins) posted 12 points, a team-high eight rebounds and four assists against Cheyney.

After taking a 33-24 halftime lead, Cal U seized control of the game with a 20-6 run over the opening seven-plus minutes of the second half to take a 53-30 lead. During the rally, Williams scored eight points, Michael hit a pair of three-pointers and the Vulcans made 7-of-11 shots from the field. Cal U maintained its significant double-digit lead through the remainder of the game, as Cheyney was only able to cut the deficit to as few as 14 points, 80-66, after scoring the final six-straight points of the game.

In the win, the Vulcans featured one of their best shooting performances of the season by making 53.8 percent (28-of-52) of their shots. Cal U also made 9-of-19 three-pointers (47.4 percent) and 15-of-21 free-throws (71.4 percent). In the loss, Cheyney shot at a 42.3 clip (22-of-52) from the field and 72.4 percent (21-of-29) from the charity stripe.

Senior guard Lutfiyya Muhammad led three starters for the Wolves in double-figures with 17 points and six steals. Classmate Angel Stephens added 11 points, four rebounds and six steals.

After being out-rebounded for only the second time this year, Cal U held a 38-24 advantage on the glass behind 12 offensive rebounds that led to 16 second-chance points. Despite committing a season-high 36 turnovers, the Vulcans collected 16 steals and forced 27 turnovers.
