Cal U wins seven events at WVU State Games

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. (Jan. 23) – The California University of Pennsylvania men's track & field team won seven events (six individual, one relay) on Saturday at the West Virginia State Games, highlighted by junior All-American Brice Myers (Pittsburgh, Pa./McDowell) provisionally qualifying for the 2010 NCAA Division II Indoor Track & Field Championships in the 60-meter hurdles.

Competing in the 60-meter hurdles for the first time this season, Myers won both the preliminaries and finals of the event. In the preliminary race, the former McDowell standout posted a time of 8.30 seconds before provisionally qualifying for the NCAA Championships with a time of 8.21 seconds in the finals. He won the finals of the event by almost three-tenths of a second.

Senior tri-captain Frank Ehrensberger (Saint Marys, Pa./Elk County Catholic) captured titles in both the 200- and 400-meter dashes at West Virginia. In the 200 meters, he crossed the finish line in 22.70 seconds to qualify for the 2010 Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Indoor Championships. A three-time qualifier for the NCAA Championships, Ehrensberger added a victory in the 400 meters with a time of 50.52 seconds.

Ehrensberger and Myers were also members of the winning 4x400-meter relay team on Saturday. Joined by freshman Da'Joun Heidelberg (Erie, Pa./Cathedral Prep) and sophomore Alex Smith (South Park, Pa./South Park), Cal U won the event by over 12 seconds with a time of 3 minutes, 26.54 seconds.

Like Myers, Heidelberg also won the preliminaries and finals of the 60-meter dash. After running a time of 7.08 in the preliminary race, the Erie native posted a season-best time of 6.97 seconds in the finals. Fellow freshman Dwight Phillips (Cincinnati, Ohio/Lakota West) finished second in the finals with a time of 7.23 seconds to qualify for the PSAC Championships.

Redshirt senior Dadre Williams (Pittsburgh, Pa./Penn Hills) also qualified for the league championships in the 200 meters after crossing the finish line in 23.37 seconds, while newcomer Brandon Claypool (Lemoyne, Pa./Trinity) qualified for the PSAC Championships after clearing 4.15 meters (13-7 1/4 feet) in the pole vault.

Tri-captains Eric Reger (Manor, Pa./Hempfield) and Kyle Spaniol (Coraopolis, Pa./Our Lady of the Sacred Heart) won the 1-mile run and weight throw, respectively. In the mile, Reger finished with a time of 4:37.84, while Spaniol posted a heave of 13.63 meters (44-8 feet) in the weight throw.

Freshman Aaron Roe (Virginia Beach, Va./Landstown) rounded out the winners for the Vulcans after finishing the 800-meter run in 2:01.42.

Cal U returns to action on Saturday, Jan. 30, when it travels to Edinboro, Pa., for the Al Hall Freedom games.
