Box Score

EDINBORO, Pa. (Jan. 23) – Senior guard Brooque Williams (Pittsburgh, Pa./Perry) scored a game-high 20 points and set the all-time school record for steals on Saturday to help the No. 21 Vulcans post a 69-52 win over Edinboro in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) West play at McComb Fieldhouse.

The California University of Pennsylvania women's basketball team has now won five of its last six games to improve to 13-4 overall and 3-1 in league action. Meanwhile, Edinboro drops to 11-6 overall and 2-2 in divisional play this season after having its five-game win streak snapped on Saturday. The game also marked the first home loss for the Fighting Scots this year at McComb Fieldhouse.

Williams posted her ninth 20-point game of the season on 8-of-18 shooting from the floor and four-of-six from the free-throw line. She added four rebounds and five assists in the win. The All-American guard also collected seven steals to break the previous career record of 359 set by Megan Storck (2003-06). Williams also ranks fifth in PSAC history with 363 steals; the all-time league record of 420 steals was set by Millersville's Gema Robles (1999-2003).

Junior forward Kayla Smith (Elkins, W.Va./Elkins) continued her double-double play, finishing with 18 points (14 in the second half) and a game-high 15 rebounds (11 offensive). Senior guard Crystal Andrews (Johnstown, Pa./Johnstown/Pitt-Johnstown) posted 11 points, eight rebounds, five assists and three steals, while redshirt freshman guard Kiara Brown (Ambridge, Pa./Ambridge) added 10 points off the bench.

After leading for all by 21 seconds in the first half, the Vulcans took a 33-29 lead into halftime before the Fighting Scots scored two quick baskets to tie the game at 33-33 with 18:22 left. Cal U countered with points on consecutive possessions to reclaim the lead. Leading 45-41, the Vulcans mounted an 8-0 rally over a three-plus minute span to take a 53-41 advantage with 8:43 remaining. Edinboro stopped the run and made it a single-possession deficit with a three-pointer before Cal U sealed the win with a 10-2 run capped with a lay-up by Smith to make it a 63-46 lead with 3:09 left in the game.

In the win, Cal U shot 37.3 percent (25-of-67) from the field and 60.0 percent (18-of-30) from the free-throw line while Edinboro made 40.4 percent (23-of-57) of its shots and only 30.0 percent (3-of-10) of its free-throws. Both teams struggled from beyond the arc, combining to shoot only 4-of-25 (16.0 percent).

Senior guard Samantha Reimer, who ranks third all-time in scoring at Edinboro, was limited to a team-high nine points after averaging 20.8 points entering the weekend. It marked the first time in 34 games that Reimer was held to single digits with the last time also coming against the Vulcans.

Led by 15 rebounds from Smith, the Vulcans held a 46-40 edge on the glass with 23 offensive rebounds. Cal U also held a sizeable 29-10 advantage in the points off turnovers category after forcing Edinboro into a season-high 25 turnovers.

Cal U continues its road trip on Wednesday, Jan. 27, when it travels to face rival IUP at 5:30 p.m. The Vulcans swept the regular-season series against the Crimson Hawks last year before losing to IUP in the PSAC Championship for the third-straight season.
