No. 8 Tennis sweeps Holy Family, 9-0

CALIFORNIA (March 27) – The No. 8 California University of Pennsylvania tennis team earned its fifth win of the season over a regionally-ranked team on Friday, as it claimed a dominating 9-0 victory against Holy Family University.

The Vulcans (12-2), who are ranked No. 1 in the Atlantic Region, claimed wins in all 12 sets in singles play. The Tigers (11-5), who are the No. 6-ranked team in the East Region, previously defeated Division I La Salle University earlier in the week.

Cal U took an early 3-0 lead in the match against Holy Family, winning the three doubles matches after losing only a combined four games. In their first action as a doubles team, freshmen Alina Stanila (Alexandria, Romania/Technical) and Anastassiya Zherdeva (Almaty, Kazakhstan) registered an 8-2 win over seniors Quena Borres and Shakir Willett. At No. 2 doubles, freshman Axelle Fernandez (Nice, France/Institut Familial) and sophomore Laurie Navarro (Eysus, France/Jules Supervielle) claimed an 8-2 victory against junior Melanie Pulsinelli and senior Liana Lui. Sophomores Nina Kowalski (Hofheim, Germany/Man Taunus) and Galina Vishnikina (Almaty, Kazakhstan/Sport Military) earned their seventh doubles win of the season by an 8-0 count over freshmen Nicole Dogas and Amanda Tole.

Stanila went on to post a 6-1, 6-0 victory over Willett at the first slot and Fernandez earned a 6-2, 6-1 win against Borres at No. 2 singles. Navarro defeated Lui by a 6-3, 6-2 count at the No. 4 position, while freshman Mariana Oliveira (Sao Paulo, Brazil/Martha Falcao) was victorious at No. 6 singles, winning 6-3, 6-0 over Dogas. Kowalski and Zherdeva each registered 6-0, 6-0 victories at the Nos. 3 and 5 positions, respectively.

The Vulcans return to action on Wednesday, April 1, when they open Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) West play with matches against both Slippery Rock University and Mercyhurst College, beginning at 3 p.m.
