No. 8 Vulcans win two Top 25 matches

GREENCASTLE, Ind. (March 14) – The No. 8 Vulcans registered a pair of dual victories against nationally-ranked opponents on Saturday, edging host DePauw University (Ind.) – the No. 16 team in Division III – and No. 23 Grand Valley State University (Mich.).

Against the host Tigers, the California University of Pennsylvania tennis team lost all three doubles matches before rallying to win five singles matches to claim a 5-4 victory. Freshman Axelle Fernandez (Nice, France/Institut Familial) rallied to clinch the Vulcans' victory against DePauw with a three-set victory at the No. 4 position against freshman Kelly Gebert, 7-5, 3-6, 6-1.

Graduate student Helena VanEysendeyk earned a 6-2, 6-1 win at the No. 1 singles position over sophomore Janelle Arita, the No. 17-ranked singles player in Division III. Freshman Alina Stanila (Alexandria, Romania/Technical) added a 6-2, 6-2 victory junior Greer Mackie at the second slot, while sophomore Nina Kowalski earned a 6-4, 6-2 win against junior Kayla Smith at the No. 4 position. In her first career match, freshman Anastassiya Zherdeva (Almaty, Kazakhstan) registered a three-set victory over sophomore Tricia Wilks, 6-5, 4-6, 6-4.

In the second match of the day, Cal U won two of the three doubles matches en route to earning a 5-1 victory. VanEysendeyk sealed the victory for the Vulcans with a 6-2, 6-2 win against freshman Maria Gassanova at the No. 1 singles position.

VanEysendeyk and Stanila opened doubles play with an 8-4 victory against Gassanova and freshman Katelyn Schaffer. At the third slot, Fernandez and sophomore Laurie Navarro (Eysus, France/Jules Supervielle) won a 9-8 match against sophomore Jackie Shipman and senior Jamie Oppenlander.

In singles play, Stanila and Zherdeva both picked up victories at the Nos. 2 and 4 positions, respectively.

The Vulcans is idle for almost two weeks before returning to action on Friday, March 27, against Holy Family University (Pa.).
