ERIE, Pa. (Feb. 7) – The Vulcans dropped their fifth-straight game on Saturday, falling 83-59 to No. 5 Gannon University at the Hammermill Center in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) West action.
With the loss, the California University of Pennsylvania men's basketball team falls to 10-10 overall and 3-5 in league play. In its first year with the conference, Gannon remains in first place of the Western Division standings with a 7-1 league mark and an 18-2 overall record to rank No. 2 in the NCAA Division II Atlantic Region.
Junior guard
Jerial Nixon (Lorain, Ohio/Lorain Admiral King/Lakeland C.C. (Ohio) led three Vulcans in double figures with 16 points off the bench. He made 6-of-11 shots from the field with three three-pointers.
Sophomore guard
Joe Berenato (Pittsburgh, Pa./Central Catholic) and freshman forward
Kelsey Williams (Sandusky, Ohio/Sandusky) each finished with 15 points. Williams led the team with six rebounds, while Berenato collected a team-high three assists.
Leading 8-6 early in the first half, the Golden Knights mounted a 14-1 rally to take a 22-7 advantage with 9:10 remaining before the break. Gannon continued its momentum, stretching its lead to as many as 21 points, 32-11, with 2:46 remaining. Cal U worked the deficit down to 14 points, 32-18, before Gannon took a 37-20 lead into halftime.
Gannon maintained control of the game throughout the second half, leading by as many as 28 points, 62-34, with 9:46 remaining.
Cal U finished the game shooting 37.5 percent (21-of-56) from the field and 50.0 percent (12-for-24) from the free-throw line. In comparison, Gannon posted a .508 shooting percentage (31-of-61) from the floor and a .714 free-throw percentage (15-of-21).
Senior forward Kyle Goldencamp, a pre-season All-American, finished with 23 points and seven rebounds (four offensive) in his first action since December (11 games). Pierre Howard posted 16 points and seven rebounds, while Tyler Stoczynski added 14 points and six rebounds.
The Golden Knights held a significant advantage on the glass, out-rebounding the Vulcans by a 49-24 margin. Gannon also scored 46 of its 83 points from inside the paint.
Cal U returns to action on Wednesday, Feb. 11, when it hosts Lock Haven University for an 8 p.m. tip-off at Hamer Hall.
