No. 2 Vulcans down Slippery Rock, 88-71

SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. (Feb. 4) – All five starters scored in double figures on Wednesday, as the No. 2 Vulcans posted their 12th-straight victory with an 88-71 victory against Slippery Rock University at the Morrow Field House in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) West play.

The California University of Pennsylvania women's basketball team, who moved up one spot in the latest USA Today/ESPN Coaches' Poll this week, now boast an 18-2 overall record with a 7-0 mark in league play. Meanwhile, Slippery Rock falls to 7-13 overall and 2-4 in divisional action.

Junior guard Brooque Williams (Pittsburgh, Pa./Perry) posted her 16th double-double of the season after finishing with a game-high 33 points and 12 rebounds (three offensive). The reigning PSAC West Player of the Week made a career-high 15 shots on 22 attempts from the floor. Williams leads the 16-team conference with 22.5 points and 11.3 rebounds per game.

Sophomore forward Kayla Smith (Elkins, W.Va./Elkins) finished with 17 points on 6-of-11 shooting and collected six rebounds (four offensive). Senior guard Lindsay Johnson (New Springfield, Ohio/Springfield) added 13 points, while sophomore guard Amber Dubyak (Hastings, Pa./Cambria Heights) finished with 11 points, six assists and six steals.

Senior guard Crystal Andrews (Johnstown, Pa./Johnstown/Pitt-Johnstown) rounded out the Cal U starting line-up, collecting 11 points, eight assists and four steals.

Holding a slim 7-6 lead early in the first half, the Vulcans scored nine-straight points to take a 16-6 lead on a three-pointer by Andrews with 15:51 remaining. The Rock eventually worked the deficit down to five points, 28-23, with 8:26 left in the half. In the final five minutes of the period, Cal U mounted an 11-2 rally to take a 47-31 lead into the break.

In the opening 20 minutes of the game, the Vulcans shot 64.3 percent (18-of-28) from the floor and forced Slippery Rock into 17 turnovers, which were converted into 15 points.

Cal U expanded its lead to 24 points, 66-42, with 14:49 remaining in the game on a lay-up by Williams. The Vulcans maintained a sizeable lead throughout the second half with The Rock cutting the lead to as few as 15 points twice during the period. Williams scored 20 of her 33 points in the second half after making 9-of-12 attempts.

Both teams shot over 50 percent from the field, as the Vulcans made 35-of-64 attempts (54.7 percent) from the floor and 7-of-15 (46.7 percent) from beyond the arc. Meanwhile, The Rock shot 51.8 percent (29-of-56) from the field.

Slippery Rock held a 30-28 advantage on the glass, marking only the fourth time this season Cal U was out-rebounded by its opponent. The Vulcans also collected 15 steals and forced 26 turnovers by Slippery Rock.

Cal U concludes its three-game road trip on Saturday, Feb. 7, when it faces Gannon University in Erie, Pa. Tip-off at the Hammermill Center is slated for 5:30 p.m.
