ST. LEO, Fla. (Feb. 28) – The No. 9 Vulcans swept doubles play and captured five singles matches to post an 8-1 victory over Saint Leo University (Fla.) on Saturday.

The California University of Pennsylvania tennis team improves to 8-1 overall, while Saint Leo falls to 1-7 overall this spring.

Cal U opened the match with a dominant doubles session, losing only a combined six games. Graduate student Helena VanEysendeyk (Meythet, France/Zurich International) and freshman Alina Stanila (Alexandria, Romania/Technical) teamed up for an 8-2 win at No. 1 doubles over the Lions' Lina Benkirane and Jeannette McDonald. At the second slot, freshman Axelle Fernandez (Nice, France/Institut Familial) and sophomore Laurie Navarro (Eysus, France/Jules Supervielle) claimed an 8-4 win over juniors Taylor Cleaves and Shaena Keefe. The Vulcans finished off the sweep at No. 3 doubles, where sophomore Nina Kowalski (Hofheim, Germany/Man Taunus) and freshman Mariana Oliveira (Sao Paulo, Brazil/Martha Falcao) dealt juniors Gina Schifano and Lara King an 8-0 defeat.

VanEysendeyk earned a third-set tiebreak win over Benkirane at No. 1 singles, 5-7, 6-2, 10-1. Stanila cruised to a 6-1, 6-1 victory over Keefe at the second slot, while Fernandez responded with a 6-1, 6-3 win over McDonald at the No. 3 position.

Kowalski picked up a win at No. 4 singles over Schifano, 6-2, 6-2, while sophomore Galina Vishnikina (Almaty, Kazakhstan/Sport Military) topped King at the sixth slot.

Cal U continues its Spring Break play tomorrow, Sunday, March 1, when it travels to Lakeland, Fla., to face No. 17 Florida Southern College for a 10 a.m. match.
