EDINBORO, Pa. (Feb. 21) – Behind a 25-point, 12-rebound performance by junior guard
Brooque Williams (Pittsburgh, Pa./Perry), the No. 6 Vulcans claimed a 74-60 victory against Edinboro University on Saturday at the McComb Fieldhouse in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) West action.
With the win, the California University of Pennsylvania women's basketball team maintains its one-game lead in the divisional standings with an 11-1 mark in league play and 22-3 overall record. Meanwhile, Edinboro drops to 13-12 overall and 4-8 in conference action. Both teams have only two games remaining in the regular season.
Williams registered her 17th double-double of the season with game-high totals of 25 points and 12 rebounds (six offensive). She made 11-of-23 attempts from the floor and three-of-four attempts from the free-throw line. The Pittsburgh native, who leads the league in scoring, also collected four steals and three assists. Williams enters the final week of the regular season with 1,338 career points, only nine points shy of passing
Denise Hearn (1981-85) for eighth place in school history.
Sophomore forward
Kayla Smith (Elkins, W.Va./Elkins) finished with 18 points on 7-of-14 shooting. She also registered six rebounds (four offensive) and three steals. Senior guard
Crystal Andrews (Johnstown, Pa./Johnstown/Pitt-Johnstown) added nine points, while classmate
Lindsay Johnson (New Springfield, Ohio/Springfield) posted eight points and eight rebounds (three offensive).
After a slow start to the game, the Vulcans took a 33-25 halftime lead after the two teams combined for eight ties and seven lead changes. In the opening five-plus minutes of the second half, Cal U mounted an 18-4 run to stretch its lead to 22 points, 51-29. During the rally, the Vulcans made 8-of-13 shots from the floor and forced nine turnovers. Williams scored nine of her 14 second half points during the run. Cal U eventually stretched its lead to as many as 26 points, 61-35, with 10:25 remaining in the game when Williams converted a traditional three-point play. Edinboro would only manage to cut the deficit to 14 points, 74-60, in the final minute of the game.
Cal U finished the game shooting at a .417 clip (30-of-72) after making 48.6 percent (17-of-35) of its shots in the second half. In comparison, Edinboro posted a .407 field-goal percentage (24-of-59) for the game.
The Vulcans dominated from within close, out-rebounding the Fighting Scots by a 44-34 margin and scoring 50 points inside the paint. Cal U collected 10 steals on 28 turnovers and scored 26 points off turnovers.
Junior guard Samantha Reimer led Edinboro with 21 points after making five three-pointers, while junior forward Kelsey Conklin added 18 points and a team-best seven rebounds.
Cal U returns to action on Wednesday, Feb. 25, with a home game against Slippery Rock University. Tip-off at Hamer Hall is slated for 6 p.m.
