Vulcans top Lock Haven, 85-34

CALIFORNIA (Feb. 14) – Junior guard Brooque Williams (Pittsburgh, Pa./Perry) led four players in double figures on Saturday to lead the No. 6 Vulcans to an 85-34 win against Lock Haven University at Hamer Hall in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) West action.

The California University of Pennsylvania women's basketball team moves to 20-3 overall and 9-1 in conference action. Meanwhile, Lock Haven drops its 14th-straight game and falls to 3-20 overall with an 0-10 mark in league play.

Williams finished with a game-high 24 points, along with eight rebounds, two steals and two assists. She made 10-of-14 attempts from the floor and four-of-five from the free-throw line for her 16th 20-point game of the season. Williams, who leads the PSAC in both scoring and rebounding, now has amassed 1,301 career points (15.0 pointer per game).

Sophomore forward Kayla Smith (Elkins, W.Va./Elkins) finished with 16 points, seven rebounds and three blocks against the Bald Eagles. Senior guard Lindsay Johnson (New Springfield, Ohio/Springfield) added 14 points with team-high totals of nine rebounds and five steals. Senior Shaquetta Mance (Flint, Mich./Hamady/Mott C.C. (Mich.)) scored 10 points off the bench, while sophomore Amber Dubyak (Hastings, Pa./Cambria Heights) collected seven points, five rebounds and three assists.

Both teams struggled with turnovers in the opening minutes of the game, as the Vulcans and Bald Eagles combined for 14 turnovers in the first eight minutes of the game. Leading only by a 13-12 margin, Cal U mounted a 23-6 rally over the next eight minutes to claim a 36-18 lead with 4:00 left before halftime. The Vulcans expanded their first-half lead to 22 points, 44-22, at the break.

In the first half, Cal U scored 21 points off turnovers and shot 57.6 percent (19-of-33) from the field. The Vulcans also held a sizeable 24-5 advantage on the glass and forced Lock Haven into 13 turnovers while building a 22-point lead.

The Vulcans continued their momentum in the second half, out-scoring the Bald Eagles by a 16-2 margin in the opening five minutes to stretch their lead to 26 points, 60-24. Cal U continued to expand its lead after shooting over 61 percent (16-of-26) in the second half, leading by as many 51 points, 85-34.

For the game, Cal U registered its second-best shooting performance of the season at 59.3 percent (35-of-59) from the field. In comparison, Lock Haven managed only a .302 field-goal percentage (13-for-43) after scoring just 12 points in the second half.

Behind a combined 24 rebounds by Johnson, Smith and Williams, the Vulcans out-rebounded the Bald Eagles by an astounding 44-13 margin. With 15 offensive rebounds, Cal U scored 17 second-chance points.

The Cal U defense pressured Lock Haven into 30 turnovers, collecting 14 steals and scoring 36 points off turnovers.

Seniors Lauren Kelshaw and Evelyn Wynn each led the Bald Eagles with eight points, as no Lock Haven player scored in double figures.

The Vulcans return to action on Wednesday, Feb. 18, when they travel to face rival No. 11 Indiana University of Pennsylvania. Tip is set for 5:30 p.m.
