CALIFORNIA (Feb. 11) – Senior guard
Shaquetta Mance (Flint, Mich./Hamady/Mott C.C. (Mich.)) posted game-high 25 points on Wednesday at Hamer Hall, as the No. 6 California University of Pennsylvania women's basketball team cruised to a 93-52 victory over Clarion University in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) West play.
With the win, the Vulcans improve to 19-3 overall and 8-1 in league play. Meanwhile, the Golden Eagles drop to 9-13 overall and 3-6 in divisional action.
Mance scored a season-high 25 points in 26 minutes off the bench. She made 11-of-15 attempts from the floor, while posting her fourth 20-point game of her career. Mance scored 21 of her 25 points in the second half.
Sophomore forward
Kayla Smith (Elkins, W.Va./Elkins) registered her ninth 20th point game of the season, finishing with 24 points on 9-of-18 shooting. The West Virginia native also registered eight rebounds (three offensive), four assists and three steals.
Junior
Brooque Williams (Pittsburgh, Pa./Perry) rounded out the Cal U trio in double-figure scoring with 16 points after battling foul trouble for most of the game. The 5-8 athletic guard made 8-of-14 attempts from the field and collected a team-high five assists.
Senior guard
Lindsay Johnson (New Springfield, Ohio/Springfield) finished with eight points, eight rebounds, five steals and four assists, while sophomore guard
Amber Dubyak (Hastings, Pa./Cambria Heights) added eight points, eight rebounds and four assists.
Leading 9-8 early in the first half, the Vulcans scored 10-straight points to take a 19-8 lead on a Williams jumper with 10:56 remaining. Later in the half, Cal U mounted a 17-2 rally over a four-minute span to claim a 38-14 lead with 5:28 left. During the run, the Vulcans made 7-of-10 shot attempts and forced six turnovers.
Cal U took a 43-22 halftime lead after forcing 20 turnovers that the Vulcans converted into 17 points.
Early in the second half, the Vulcans scored 13 unanswered points to increase their lead to 64-32 with 11:55 remaining in the game. Cal U eventually stretched its lead to as many as 41 points, 93-52, on a pair of free-throws in the final minute of the game.
After shooting 65.6 percent (21-of-32) in the second half, Cal U finished the game shooting 52.8 percent (38-of-72) from the floor. In comparison, Clarion shot a season-worst 30.0 percent (18-of-60) from the field after making just 28.6 percent (6-of-21) from three-point territory.
The Vulcans out-rebounded the Golden Eagles by a 43-35 margin and scored 30 points from inside the paint. Cal U also forced Clarion into a season-high 30 turnovers that led to 26 points.
Senior guard Katrina Greer scored a team-high 15 points for the Golden Eagles, while junior guard Lizzie Suwala added 11 points.
Cal U returns to action on Saturday, Feb. 14, when it hosts Lock Haven University for a 3 p.m. contest at Hamer Hall. The Vulcans, along with the Women's Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA), will be hosting Pink Zone on Saturday in the fight against breast cancer on Saturday.
