No. 10 Cal U downed by Seton Hill, 67-56

GREENSBURG, Pa. (Dec. 30) – Despite erasing an 11-point halftime deficit, the No. 10 Vulcans dropped a 67-56 non-conference contest to Seton Hill on Wednesday afternoon.

The loss snaps a four-game winning streak for the California University of Pennsylvania women's basketball team, who fall to 7-2 this season. Meanwhile, the Griffins improve to 6-1 overall this year.

Senior guard Brooque Williams (Pittsburgh, Pa./Perry) scored a team-high 19 points after shooting 7-of-15 from the floor and five-of-eight from the free-throw line. She also collected five rebounds (three offensive), three assists and two blocks. Junior forward Kayla Smith (Elkins, W.Va./Elkins) registered her seventh double-double of the season with 10 points and 12 rebounds (five offensive).

The Griffins opened the game with a 10-0 run with 15:20 left before halftime after Cal U missed its first nine shots and committed four turnovers. The Vulcans followed with a 15-6 rally behind nine points by Williams over a span of 9:14 to trim the deficit to 16-15 with 6:46 remaining in the first half. Seton Hill then countered with a 19-9 rally to close the half with a 35-24 lead after Cal U shot only 30.8 percent (8-of-26) from the field.

In the opening minutes of the second half, Seton Hill expanded its lead to as many as 16 points, 40-24, before Cal U mounted a 17-4 run to cut the lead to 44-41 with 12:13 left in the game. During the rally, the Vulcans made seven-of-nine shot attempts and forced the Griffins into 11-consecutive missed shots. For the first time in the game, Cal U evened the score at 47-47 on a three-pointer by redshirt freshman guard Kiara Brown (Ambridge, Pa./Ambridge) with 9:47 remaining. Leading 56-54, Seton Hill scored 11-straight points over three-plus minutes to take a 67-54 lead with less than a minute left in the game.

For only the second time this season (both losses), the Vulcans shot under 40 percent by finishing with a .392 field-goal percentage (20-of-51). Cal U also only managed to shoot 28.6 percent (4-of-14) from the outside and 66.7 percent (12-of-18) from the free-throw line. In comparison, the Griffins shot at a .490 clip (24-of-49) with eight three-pointers and made all 11 attempts from the charity stripe.

Cal U held a sizeable 36-23 advantage on the glass with an impressive 17 offensive rebounds, but committed 22 turnovers in the loss.

The Vulcans return to action on Saturday, Jan. 2, when they host West Chester in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Crossover play at 1 p.m. Last year, Cal U posted an 80-59 road victory over the Golden Rams.
